We caught up with 2026 PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature winner Edwidge Danticat on the red carpet at the #PENLitAwards and later spoke to her about her achievement, the courage required to be a writer now, and her hopes for the future of free speech in the U.S. (1/2)

I also hate my smart TVs because they constantly glitch, freeze, etc. Sure, add a device so I can use my streaming services but otherwise just show me the channels and i’ll flip through.

…I would have ALSO benefitted from comprehensive education around its use, and less of a sensationalist attitude around it (don’t! Scary! Bad!) in the same way as the D.A.R.E. Program was ineffective.

We need to approach things (like youth social media use) from multiple angles.

I know banning things doesn’t get rid of things. But let’s be clear: if alcohol had been legal for me to purchase at 16, I would have drank it WAY more than I already did. It was good that it wasn’t as readily available AND I would have STRONGLY benefitted from more sober third spaces/activities.

ā€œā€˜When are governments really going to enforce, raise the stakes on fines, ban the companies if necessary for not complying,’ she added.ā€

Honestly why not both? Why not hold the companies to higher standards (and bigger penalties) AND fund creation of more third spaces, including digital ones?

Literally just checked my Submittable after months of not to check in on this, so woohoo to the 1% chance! And even if it doesn't make it, at least it was good practice. 🄹 I'll either celebrate with or drown my sorrows in some TB soon enough.

Anyone else frequently mentally calculate how many days, weeks, months it would take for you and your family to become unhoused if no one is able to find employment again?

No? Just me?

Hah nice. I have literally not opened it since I made this post. I get really overwhelmed with new social apps (which I think it is, yeah?) But some folks swear by it! I still wish I'd been able to recover the original account but even their customer service folks couldn't help. Meh.

I’ve been getting really hyper-focused on my writing and also researching for my book(s) and researching the publishing world in general. So that’s probably another step in the right direction, yeah? #writingcommunity

So I finally gave up trying to recover my Discord account and made a new one with a burner email. What do I need to learn about using it? Give me guidance, y’all.

I read this story by Carmen Maria Machado today and it was as brilliant as the rest of her work and I need to be writing at that level and will lose sleep over it until it happens.

Okay but that's like at least enough to feed 6-8 people so if they all split the cost, would be anywhere from $22-30 per person, which is kinda typical of stadium food. Not very practical, though.

Kitchen countertop workers are dying. Some lawmakers want to ban their lawsuits Some safety experts want California to stop the cutting of quartz countertops saying it can't be done safely. Lawmakers, meanwhile, contemplate a ban on workers' lawsuits against quartz manufacturers.

A more serious issue on the topic of renovating a home. Apparently manufacturing quartz countertops is very dangerous.
