🦠🐛 Thrilled to share that our project MicropBoost has received new funding from the BMFTR!
We’ll advance microbial formulations to improve Bt efficacy, evaluating their field performance and commercialisation potential at @mitjare.bsky.social’s lab

I am happy to see that this beautiful review about detecting rare organisms in metagenomics is now available: kwnsfk27.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F... congrats Marios Valmas and Sotirios Vasileiadis for leading and doing the heavy lifting!

Interesting! Maybe it's the lack of the section microbial ecology too? Additionally, I am wondering about the web pages definition of "Best scientist" which is how they describe the section. In microbiology, Didier Raoult made it to the top.

The alkane 1-monooxigenase gene alkB of Pseudomonas sp. FF2 is upregulated during colonisation of Arabidopsis thaliana leaves Bacteria on leaf surfaces encounter highly variable access to nutrients and water. This oligotrophic environment is partly due to the presence of cuticular waxes that render the leaf surface hydrophob...

🦠 New preprint! 🌿 Our bioreporter shows heterogeneous alkB expression in Pseudomonas living on Arabidopsis leaves.
Plant cuticular alkanes may be more than just a barrier, they could also be fuel for bacteria! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Interesting! How do endogenous surfactants differ from exogenous ones? Do they remain and the outer membrane or similar?

Hitching a Ride in the Phyllosphere: Surfactant Production of Pseudomonas spp. Causes Co-swarming of Pantoea eucalypti 299R - Microbial Ecology Here, we demonstrate the beneficial effect of surfactant-producing pseudomonads on Pantoea eucalypti 299R. We conducted a series of experiments in environments of increasing complexity. P. eucalypti 2...

Cool! We recently found that Pantoea can use swarming Pseudomonads to get to places. Maybe there is a more fundamental pattern here than just for PSA? link.springer.com/article/10.1...

In case you're wondering: FU and TU Berlin are not on the list of German universities who have just quit X on January 10, since they already left quite a while ago.

It has been a long way to get this published and I am very proud of it: enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/.... @rschlec.bsky.social last PhD thesis chapter about how additional species shape binary strain interactions in the phyllosphere at the population and µm resolution.

Any guesses about how the decision ended? Spoiler alert - education, research, and culture will be more restrictive in the next years to come. But, *irony on*, the good news is, that parking will remain cheap in Berlin. *irony off* So much for forward facing politics.

Berlin senat is about to decide upon cutting the next year's budget for universities and scientific institutes in Berlin. Currently they are aiming at a cut of about 8%. Our student numbers are rising and the graduates are dearly needed in education and science. #safebraincity

I want to believe we have some control here, but if we we definitely don’t have it if we don’t use it.

Click below and then click on “subscribe” to choose whether to mute or block. Either is fine, IMO!

Amazing actual human artist @franzanth.bsky.social has curated a blocklist and created an account to host it (and also follow packs of real artists and science communicators) at @contentscrapers.bsky.social.

They are extremely successful on Threads and Twitter because their content gets engagement, regardless of how spammy and fake it is.

And, or course, they immediately arrived on Bluesky.

BUT BLUESKY IS FIGHTING BACK.

Content Scrapers are accounts that steal images and videos and then repost them without giving credit. Often they are AI or illustrations labeled as real photographs. Often they say they are one thing but are actually another.
