Was happy to be greeted by inky caps this am. This mushroom excretes enzymes to digest itself to spread more spores. When the dark spores mix with the digestive fluids, it gives the mushroom an inky appearance. So goth, I love it.

A little belated but I've started a faculty position at Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology department at @ucsantabarbara.bsky.social. I'm absolutely stoked! I'll be recruiting at all levels and will be at #Botany2025
Reach out!

Logo of an oval with broad boarder encapsulating the words “Kansas Paleobotany”
Logo with the words “Kansas Paleobotany” with a rock hammer cracking the first “a” in “Kansas”.
New logo(s) just dropped. Self expression in my research endeavors has been important for me lately. Low key, Tony Hawk pro skater logo was an inspo for these
I'll have more info in a few weeks when I get back from fieldwork but I'll be recruiting 2 graduate students to begin in 2026 (1 PhD, 1 MS). My lab investigates macroevolutionary dynamics using phylogenetic methods & the fossil record. Please share with students having strong research interests!
Was greeted by this massive slime mold in my garden this morning. One of my fav organisms
Recently installed a cassette player in my 94 Chevy c1500. Physical media brings me so much joy
Plenty of younger fossil grapes tho
I wish. Modern dolmas still a win
KUPB scoured central KS for 100 million year old plants. Prospects ahead
Dawg 😭
Thanks!
Thanks for y’all’s support!
Round it out with plants
Also special shoutout to the ancestors 🖤
Some good news: I’ve officially been awarded tenure with promotion in rank to Associate Professor and Associate Curator
Thanks to all those who supported me along the way ❤️
Our paper is now published🌲⛏️🇦🇶

This is something I’ve done with @briladwig.bsky.social as broader impact activities for grants. I’d love to see more academics make zines.
Epiphytes are drip for the trees
Im so bummed to see this. Cipres had been an incredible computational resource to my research program. As an ECR I depended on it to run so many phylogenetic analyses, many if which ended up in my publications. I’m really sad to see it go. Much gratitude for the people who kept Cipres running
Please share this opportunity widely! Instructors: @fmachado.bsky.social @alencarlrv.bsky.social @joelmcglothlin.bsky.social Jacqueline Sztepanacz, Patrick Carter & Joe Felsenstein (virtually)
@briladwig.bsky.social is finally on bluesky! It’s been a blessing to collab with her on paleo inspired zines. Check her out
What an opportunity to work with an amazing (paleo)botanist!
As a horror fan, I have to share (with permission) this student made zine. It def gives some Junji Ito vibes imo
While some folks understandably argue that grading is not aligned with the spirit of zines, I had to make a compromise as an incentive. So Students do get EC points for this. I made a rubric that served as a compass. I think students appreciated that structure. Almost all got the max amnt of points
I think this gave students the opportunity to connect with the learning material (biodiversity) while conveying meaning in their own individualized ways. Which I think is empowering. Will def make this an integral part of class.
