#BonApriltit DAY 19

The big "holidays" for my hunter-gatherers are Midsummer and High Winter. At midsummer, disparate "clans" gather for about two weeks to hunt seal and feast. During High Winter, they worship their ancestors and traditionally pass around mead with smoked meats and roasted nuts.

#BonApriltit DAY 17

In my current WIP, which takes place primarily in a semi-nomadic hunter gatherer culture, snacks are whatever you can grab a palmful of when you're a little hungry. It varies by seasons, but the big ones are mushrooms, nuts, and berries in late summer/early autumn.

#BonApriltit DAY 16

The most popular drink amongst the semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer culture of my current WIP is mead! Mead is a hugely popular drink, as it's versatile and can be drunk all year long. It can be taken warmed up or cold, and you can add berries in the late summer/early autumn.

The Doorkeepers - Uncanny Magazine It’s Sunday night, which means it’s our Friday night, which means the Doorkeepers go out and get absolutely blasted. It’s not as messy as it sounds. We’re polite drunks; we make a point of it actually...

In case people need it this week, I had a story come out in January about living through times when you don't think things can get better. (Spoiler: They can.)

I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

Black and white photo of five shorthaired tabby kittens playing on the sidewalk and steps in front of a structure of some kind. There is also an adult tabby cat with them.

Artemis (2nd century CE). Odd that NASA didn’t use this on their mission patch. There’s still time I guess

Ownership. When I buy something I want it to stay bought. I'm fed up subscribing and watching my hard earned cash just leach away into the sand over art that I truly love. I'm sick of renting happiness.

If you’re a Hachette author you should be talking to your editors and teams about this. If they’re using AI to counter AI, it’s still AI. And it may also be giving your work to the machine, serving it up on a contractual platter.

I primarily use LibreOffice these days, as I am weaning myself of Google Docs. I have a Macbook Air for home, and an iPad + keyboard that I recently bought to write on the go. I really love taking notes on my iPad, but I don't think it will replace handwritten notes that I write with a fountain pen.

shout out to all the writers and artists who take forever to finish something. I get it, bro. I take a long time too. but your worth as a writer/artist isn't built upon production. so just keep striding it out. keep taking those steps. we each have our own race track. we'll get to the finish line

I've been stuck on the opening of a chapter for nearly two weeks now. I FINALLY got it working today, after taking a short walk just to, idk, touch grass and enjoy the spring. Sometimes getting out and moving around is exactly what's needed to get the ideas flowing again. #amwriting #queerwriters

ok buckaroos i am going to talk a bit on artists and writers and publishers and AI, specifically HOW to create in this environment of endless ai slop and WHY i think you will probably be fine if you heed these very important words: YOUR ART IS MORE THAN WHAT IS IN THE PAGE OR PAINTING OR FILM
