It was obviously never about saving money...
It was always about trying to out-far-right the far right in the hope of appealing to the 10% of the registered vote that's ideologically wedded to it and will never budge
I think Labour has been pretty clear about it

People are experiencing severe delays and understandable frustration due to the implementation of the #EES, but to learn what the real European "border nightmare" looks like, check out our new report, out today:

The same Met police who claimed that only "around 50,000" people turned out against the far right, at a demo anyone present could plainly see numbered in the many hundreds of thousands? It's almost like they have an institutional, ideological commitment to the success of the far right...
The Greens won against Reform *in Kent*
It's all up for grabs folks.
The myth of Reform's inevitability is just that, a myth. They can be defeated.
This is really cool, properly curious reporting - about the neighbourhood I live in and the ward I've been campaigning in. Turns out Muslims care about more than Gaza and white people want more than managed decline with extra racism on top! Who knew? www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
we have had successive uk goverments that hate refugees so much, they would rather they all die at sea than give them a chance to seek asylum.
I spoke to Shelagh Fogarty yesterday about the people tragically killed in the Channel by UK-funded racial border violence. It's from 02:10:30 here: www.globalplayer.com/catchup/lbc/...
After the tragic and avoidable deaths of four more people seeking safety in the UK yesterday, I wrote this. The UK government chooses to fund suffering and death rather than safe routes. This is lethal racist border violence.

After more people lost their lives and loved ones crossing the channel, our Senior Research and Policy Officer @drbenwhitham.bsky.social was with @lbc.co.uk @shelaghfogarty.bsky.social to talk about how our government must act and open safe routes. Listen back: www.globalplayer.com/catchup/lbc/...
"The UK-France border is becoming ever more hostile in the name of 'deterrence', but that never works.
"People come here to seek safety. We need safe routes for people to travel here, so we don't see the tragedy we've seen this morning of people losing their lives."
"All of these deaths are preventable through the creation of safe routes.
"We're sending hundreds of millions of pounds to France to fund the policing operation there, and this policing operation includes the snatching of life vests from people.
Photograph of three copies of a Refugee Action report on a desk. The title of the report is: Locked Out and Locked Up: Experiences of asylum policy and systemic racism in the UK and northern France.
The result of a year-long, cross-border research project with people seeking safety in the UK and France, mine and Haleemah Alaydi's new report for Refugee Action is out on Monday 13th April. I'll post more here then.
A vertical campaign poster on a black background. At the top, large white bold text reads "MARCH TOGETHER." In the center, a green hand-drawn oval circles the text "Saturday 28th March, Central London." At the bottom, the poster includes a QR code, the URL "togetheralliance.org.uk" with the call to action "Add your name," and the "TOGETHER" logo in the bottom right corner.

1/ We’ve got big news: RAMFEL is now Refugee and Migrant Justice.
What started as a small advice service in an East London church has grown into 1 of the UK’s largest providers of immigration advice & a leading national voice standing for the rights of migrants, refugees & people seeking asylum.
Having deliberately destroyed every single university in Gaza with the full support of the West the Zionist genocidaires (including the Epstein empire) are moving on to destroying universities in Lebanon. 🤢

Screenshot from BBC News article about a British man detained in Dubai for filming Iranian missiles on his phone. A highlighted sentence reads: "Criticism of the government is illegal in the UAE".
Halfway down the article, that critical fact so many Brits and the UK government have been only too happy to ignore when they are making money and dodging taxes, living it up in resorts built by enslaved labour, or selling weapons to be used in RSF atrocities in Sudan.

Dear Shabana, I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank. You said: “A party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to make a perilous crossing on small boats.” I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division. When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney. As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I filled water tanks and picked up litter. What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country. Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it. It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and croissants to refugees and food parcels. When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She said “we have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers whilst risking death on the seas.” She said “maybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when …
Dear Shabana,
Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.
Whether they call it a "difficult system", as Shabana Mahmood does today, or a "hostile environment", as Theresa May did in 2012, Labour and the Conservatives are equally committed to regressive, reactionary, and racist immigration policies that do nothing but harm to the UK and its communities.
Today is a dark day for anyone who believes in sanctuary in the UK.
People who've fled war and torture should be able to rebuild their lives in peace and security - not live under a constant threat of removal.
We must not stop fighting these appalling anti-refugee laws.
"Everything is politics...You don't get to make art in a fascist state"

I was at the count in Gorton and Denton last night and we all saw Matt Goodwin eat ballot papers. His girlfriend and team begged him to stop but he kept stuffing it into his mouth and making grunting sounds like the Cookie Monster
