Organizers across sectors and in higher ed are building the infrastructure to accomplish major wins in the future.
See below for more on 2025 as a banner year for membership growth in the AAUP:
AAUP-OSU is in solidarity with the Ohio Nurses Association, who is standing with survivors & calling for the removal of Wexner’s name from the medical center & all campus facilities.
Did you get a Med Center umbrella in the mail? Bring it to the picket! And some red tape to cross off the “W.”
OHIO SHOULD NEVER LOSE TO THAT STATE UP NORTH!! But, we are😬 The numbers are in—more and more students are choosing to go to U of ❌ instead of The Ohio State University thanks to laws like SB 1 that amount to state-sponsored censorship in Ohio’s colleges & universities😫#RepealSB1

All four recipients have exemplified the activism that John McNay embodied. They have been tireless advocates for academic freedom, organizing/unionism, and quality higher education. Congratulations to Profs. Mockabee, Jani, Wagner, and Jackson on this well-deserved recognition!
We are pleased to announce that the 2025 and first-ever recipients of the John T. McNay Memorial Award for Outstanding Service are Stephen Mockabee (University of Cincinnati), Pranav Jani (Ohio State University), Cathy Wagner (Miami University), and David Jackson (Bowling Green State University).
At least Ohio State continues to revise what was once an all-out ban on land acknowledgments, but it is far from enough. Most such statements are historical facts, NOT advocacy, AND they fall under the auspices of academic freedom. No other OH school banned them.🗃️ www.dispatch.com/story/news/e...
More ridiculousness and caving to political pressure by THE Over-Compliant University. @osuaaup.bsky.social is pushing back.
The Dept of Education’s $3m grant to the Chase Center (link attached) makes it plain. Don’t buy the rhetoric about the Center's political neutrality.
Brutus Buckeye and Leaf chat about Chase Center ads on the wall. One says “$5000 could be yours today!”. Another says “Need cash fast? Sign up for a class at the Chase Center” Leaf says: “Oh good, they’re bribing students now.” Brutus responds: “I think their word was ‘scholarship.’”
You'll be shocked to learn New College of Florida is on the brink of implosion just a couple of years after DeSantis engineered an extreme right-wing takeover
Fun fact: NCF's new overlords spend $134K per student (!!...the average at other FL publics is $10K) www.insidehighered.com/news/governa...
🗣️UT Austin AAUP Chapter Pres. Pauline Strong: “We oppose state censorship of college courses + support the right of gender studies faculty to teach in their areas of expertise. There is no law that says teaching about gender in a university classroom is illegal.“

Continued good news as we fight to protect educators' voices on the STRS Board!
Just minutes ago, the Court of Appeals issued its decision rejecting the State’s arguments and affirming the TRO. The TRO expires tomorrow but is expected to be extended, which will take us to the preliminary injunction hearing.
BREAKING NEWS ON STRS LAWSUIT: The 10th District Court of Appeals held oral argument this afternoon on the State’s appeal of the Trial Court’s temporary restraining order (TRO).
BREAKING: WE WON!!!

Federal Judge William G. Young ruled today in our lawsuit against the Trump administration that the policy of arresting, detaining, & deporting noncitizen students & faculty members for their pro-Palestinian advocacy violates the 1st Amendment.
Full ruling here:
"I applaud the Ohio Education Association, the Ohio Federation of Teachers, and the Ohio Conference of the American Association of University Professors for standing up for educators’ rights and for the integrity of the retirement system."
It's sad that this is where we are (and have been), but thanks to our friends at @penamerica.bsky.social for this resource.
Teaching LGBTQ Studies in Ohio under this bill is a completely miserable experience. This is, of course, what they wanted.
Ohio's Governor is now lecturing universities about making our campus tours more "pleasant" to boost flagging enrollment. Uh, guy, the tours aren't the fucking problem.
"Look, we are a labor union. We’re going to fight & respond to this moment...We're standing for what we always stood for...a powerful higher-education sector that leads to innovation & social mobility & is a bedrock of our democracy."
