Sigh. Shutting down the National Center for Atmospheric Research will make the world a more dangerous place for all of us.

Threatening NCAR, Trump administration seeks to extinguish a beacon of climate science The Trump administration’s world view is that the US doesn’t need a climate science brain trust because it doesn’t like what the brains say.

Read this from Ben Santer (very famous climate scientist for those who don’t know) about what NCAR means and what dismantling it will do.

Quantifying changes in central Vietnam rainfall amount since the Late Pleistocene Paleorecords of the Southeast Asian autumn monsoon indicate that global sea-level change drove abrupt shifts in rainfall, yet the magnitude of these c…

🚨 New manuscript! 🚨

We use speleothem calcium isotopes and Mg/Ca to reconstruct rainfall amount. Turns out central Vietnam was 50 % drier during the LGM 🤯. Climate models agree but most underestimate rainfall change.

New #ScienceCommunication website blog from me. Here, I look at another recent #megalodon study - one that used zinc isotopes & found that the giant shark wasn't just a whale killer; but probably ate whatever it wanted.

Opinion | I Watched It Happen in Hungary. Now It’s Happening Here.

The most recent U.S. ambassador to Viktor Orban’s Hungary: “After years watching Hungary suffocate under the weight of its democratic collapse, I came to understand that the real danger of a strongman isn’t his tactics; it’s how others, especially those with power, justify their acquiescence.”

I was also a Fellow. This program brought me from my home country of Australia, providing me resources+networks that paved my career path to becoming a full professor in a US institution. Having now worked with many undergrad/grad/postdocs, I have witnessed CGC benefits to society at large.

White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
