New Article: When the power goes out, most of us are inconvenienced. But for the millions of Americans relying on electricity-dependent medical equipment — ventilators, oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines — an outage can quickly become a medical emergency.

Trump has made a laughing stock of US leadership in science, democracy, ethics. Corporate money has bought all of the GOP, top to bottom.

keep thinking of a vocally anti-woke reporter who insisted that the term "environmental racism" was nonsense
Thanks for sharing this work @bikepedantic.bsky.social
Wow - read these highlights:
“The #SanJose Planning Department has rejected a proposed project because it was filed at 1.2 inches instead of 1 inch, leaving the developer stunned….Donovan Adesoro said the planning department denied his housing proposal over incorrect paper sizing…”
Huh?!?

Three updates:
1. The Justice Department has deleted a database tracking federal police misconduct. The database was first proposed in 2020 following the police killing of George Floyd.
maybe 250 words describing status
250-ish social justice words
smaller text -- 400 words on social justice and gender?
And another 150 or so on race
The number of people surprised by the long list of words NSF is targeting makes me think many of you all have not seen this: www.commerce.senate.gov/services/fil...

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.
Austin, TX Light Rail Phase Map
At 16,335 pages, the Austin Light Rail environmental review document is 1,667 pages per mile of project. We need to DRASTICALLY cut this red tape if we want to build a lot of infrastructure in this country fast.
New photos captures the Palisades Fire burning north of Santa Monica, taken from a diverted flight that was originally headed to Burbank, CA, but landed at Los Angeles International Airport instead.

A screenshot of a New York Times update that says: In Grand Central Terminal, Leon Chang, 26, of Brooklyn, said he had not heard of congestion pricing and asked what it was. When explained it was a toll for cars entering Manhattan, he then asked “What do you mean? What is a car?” Walking outside, we showed him a vehicle parked on the street. He gently touched the hood of the car. “You wish to forbid these majestic beasts from entering the city,” he said in a wistful tone. “It is a folly of man. The desire to tame the world around us.”
where does the new york times even find these people
If you want to drive in our densest, most transit-rich environments and cause pollution, congestion, and safety hazards, that’s fine, but you’ll have to pay and if that upsets you well so it goes. Drivers have had it their way for a century at the literal expense of everyone.

New electric vehicle charging station with a single car
Three electric vehicle charging stations out of order
This is a tale of two charging stations: existing equipment that is out of order and brand-new shiny equipment. It is not surprising that the reliability of public charging stations is becoming top of mind…
Nice schematic showing how a warmer climate increases not only the probability of extreme events, but also the intensity of extreme events with the same probability as the pre-Industrial climate. [From AR6 WG1 Ch11]
Nice to see some increasing density in the gingerbread housing market

Optimist: the cup is half full
Pessimist: the cup is half empty
The Institute of Traffic Engineers’ Trip Generation Manual: here’s a linear regression based on 6 observations all collected in Florida in the summertime. Use this to measure the fullness of all cups in the United States.
It’s one bus terminal Michael, how much could it cost — $10 billion?
