Receiving a flu shot doesn’t just protect you, it protects all the people you would have passed your flu on to. Among those people may be some who are frail or old.

It takes five minutes, it may save a life and will certainly save some suffering.

Get a flu shot.

Ludicrous that Australia doesn't have thousands of these. We are now years and years behind other countries who have the infrastructure to run everything on renewable energy, & we're still polluting & not taxing the billionaire fossil fuel companies. Clowns to the left of us, jokers to the right.

Saw a reel making fun of people who were expressing skepticism of the #Artemis II images in Instagram comments and while it's true that a lot of folks are just spreading conspiracy theories, there are misconceptions that can just be addressed directly!

It's impossible to take the government's talk of spending restraint seriously while it insists on handing tens of billions of dollars to the US for submarines we'll never see.

So the Epstein scandal is about politics? Silly me for thinking it’s about the mass abuse of women and girls | Marina Hyde Obsessing over individual players and political chaos leaves less time to focus on the misogyny. And that’s for the best, isn’t it guys, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

A lot has been written about the Epstein files lately, but I think this is the best piece. Marina Hyde asks what has anyone in power done to attack the structures and attitudes that allowed the abuse to happen? The answer: pretty much nothing at all.

So sorry this has been done to you and your work. Is there any other method to report this to #FamilySearch? Perhaps someone here can suggest an advocate or escalation?

The social media ban will leave young Australians in the dark on news and politics. It’s not fair | Leo Puglisi So many teenagers learn about the big stories through TikTok and Instagram. They won’t suddenly turn to newspapers and TV bulletins The social media ban for under-16s is going to stop teenagers from watching a lot of things: clips from their favourite shows, sports highlights, gaming reviews and just about anything else you can imagine. What hasn’t been discussed much is the impact it will have on young people’s ability to access news and information. Continue reading...

Since the mid 1990s, Norway has imposed a 56 per cent "special tax" for oil and gas companies, alongside a 22 per cent corporate tax rate.

Australia could learn a lesson from this and make companies pay their fair share for our natural resources.

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

I really admire you for doing this. It also applies to other instances where we might be sticking with a name or spelling and forgetting to cast a wider net in our family history searches

Coalition sours over proposed reform to 'broken' environment laws Optimism that a deal can be found to amend Australia's environment laws fades, as the Coalition raises concerns over details just days after parts of the legislation were shared with stakeholders.

Here's an idea, Minister Watt, activate your heart and spine, respect the advice of environment, climate and conservation experts, and work with the Greens to get the EPBC Act reform package passed. Your job is to be Minister 'for' the environment, remember?

Australian bird of the year 2025: nominate your favourite now We want to hear which Australian birds you think should be shortlisted for the Guardian/Birdlife Australia bird of the year poll next month Which of the 830 bird species that call Australia home (or at least one of their homes) should make it into the 2025 Australian bird of the year poll? Australia has the greatest diversity of avian life in the world, home to nearly one in 10 of the world’s 10,000 living bird species. And we love to celebrate it. Australians are renowned for admiring our beautiful, bountiful and boisterous birds. And nothing highlights that more than the Guardian/Birdlife Australia bird of the year poll, held every two years, when birdlovers around the country battle it out to see their favourite feathered friend take the crown as best bird. Australian writers shocked and ‘disgusted’ by closure of 85-year-old literary journal Meanjin After 85 years of continuous publication, Meanjin, Australia’s second-oldest literary journal, is closing.

“If the most prestigious university in Australia will not fund our most prestigious literary journal, then it makes you question whether or not universities actually care about Australian culture.”

And this is a real thing! Of all the things reading can be, first it has to be pleasurable, and entertaining, and engaging, otherwise people will do something else with their time. And pleasure reading begets more reading, or at least, more than the reading that feels like dutiful homework.

🧵I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about kindness since I've moved here to Aotearoa New Zealand and would like to share some thoughts. (Please bear with me!):

1. Kindness is learned. It's not innate. People are taught kindness by other people. We are creatures that learn by example.

Beyond Dutton's loss, this is a chance for a new type of politics in Australia The comprehensive nature of this win gives Anthony Albanese the chance to change the narrative of our politics.

"It has been so long since we have not had culture wars or grievances dominating our politics — or its undertones — it is hard to imagine what it might look like.
It opens up the scope for rational discussion about policy at a time when we need it."

Can't wait to see your analysis in the coming days. Happy retirement!
