⚛️ By careful analytic study of error bounds and numerical simulation of noisy quantum sensors, we find that the cost of zero-noise extrapolation outweighs its benefits, and that pre-characterizing a quantum sensor with inference-based techniques leads to improved performance.

🎯 When performing a measurement with a quantum sensor, every shot counts. Naively, one might hope to overcome the effects of noise using e.g. error mitigation.
🫰However, we must be careful that any shot not directly used for sensing actually gives a metrological improvement.
