recently embarked on a challenge to create a short, 2-3 min, believable, live action, prompt-scripted, ai generated film. sharing some learnings & best practices from that experience.

[SPOILER ALERT] takeaway from nier automata’s futuristic android/robot/alien world in which humans are extinct: utopia is merely a construct; even after thousands of years of evolution/technology, life/machines will never land there. however purpose & meaning can be found in the struggle towards it.
after maxis-era simcity days, I didn’t find other video games I took seriously for decades. finally in recent years I found two that have had a transformative impact on me: “zelda: tears of the kingdom,” then “nier automata,” which I beat over the weekend — great synopsis here: youtu.be/ytz04GTkMBw
A square marble tile with a shiny metal ball on it next to some papers and a coffee mug.
I'm buying a kitchen and they sent a sample of the marble counter top with a metal ball showing what the sink will be like. Now my desk looks like a 90s 3D rendering tool demo image.
ps: beach things
neverending story fans will appreciate this. recently upped my file backup game w/ a system i’ve labeled the southern oracle. purchased two 4tb ssd drives. the one with the white stripe is gate 1. blue is gate 2. the third drive (and last-resort backup) is an hdd raid called mirror gate (not shown).
…and joe pease.
end thread.
also enjoyed work by james turrell, jack butcher, leandro urlich, and michael kozlowski…
beeple cont’d…
highlights thread from my art basel miami visit yesterday.
kicking it off with beeple’s “regular animals.” was just as creepy/cool as I’d seen it on socials. ai-powered surveillance robots can be purchased at 100k a pop…
I recently shifted my focus away from product user experience design to work more upstream in my fight for the user. it’s given me a new perspective on the role of design and failed product outcomes as a result of misunderstood user needs. read more on my medium: timstutts.medium.com/from-design-...
I just wrote an article about this effort on my medium:

bought the logitech muse 6DoF pen for drawing on apple vision pro. have only been able to get it working 2D in sketch pro and 3D in doppl. takeaways: ok precision, but latency a real drag. don’t like how pen lacks digital representation / gets occluded by content. buttons nearly imperceptible. pass.

honored to have had interactive data visualization work done with ex-colleagues at IBM featured in this book from MIT Press. It’s hard to believe Watson News Explorer is nearly ten years old now. It was a news aggregator/ entity connector from the pre-fake news era.

Controlling the creation of plants using your hand. Palm orientation for grow direction, pointer and middle finger distance to thumb for flower scale and open respectively. The branches of the mango plant (first one) take on the shape of your ring and pinky fingers. #openframeworks #generativeArt
listening to this made me think that documentary films recording events in the physical world (true to form) will be the only style of cinema not disrupted by gen ai video. immersive content through VR will further differentiate/augment their experiential value.

“After the shutdown, offline features like “battery level” will still work” phew 😅
Had a blast at day 1 of Miami XR 2025 yesterday. Gave the first lightning talk, “Hospital of the Future: A Medical Opportunity Space in XR,” before a packed room full of students, academics and industry leaders at the University of Miami.
Day 2 is currently underway:

enjoying this podcast with @barrythrew.com, executive director at @grayarea.org. talks about the history of this unique arts organization. had the opportunity to volunteer at gray area in 2009, when I lived in SF. nice to get caught up on how it’s evolved since.

enjoyed “pushing the limits of icms for tactile feedback talk” by prof charles greenspon last week. shared findings from a study using bci + bionic limbs to recreate tactile feedback for amputees & those w/ spinal cord injury. this slide shows hand touch centers corresponding to areas of brain.

lemercier studio’s (joanie lemercier & juliette bibasse) new commission “lightfall” at superblue for art basel miami is a really wonderful laser projection on mist, featuring spectacular sound design.
