I don't see the problem

In the sense of being front-line, heavily armored and armed ground combat units, mechs are often tanks, yet that feels like we're getting away from the spirit of things to me.

Sometimes games have to make concessions to playability over realism. On the other hand they have to be careful because it can break suspension of reality if it's too egregious. For example, FF14 letting anyone defeat Honey B. Lovely just takes me right out of the game.
