It’s an unlikely pairing, but former Kabukicho Idol, Amina V, economist Noah Smith and myself are having a discussion about power, politics and pop culture in modern #Japan on May 30th in San Francisco. It’s free. Seats are limited. 🖖

2001: "I paid $0.99 for this Linkin Park song to be my ringtone."
2025: "I have not had my phone off of vibrate-only for ten years. People who have audible ringtones are psychopaths."

Do you know of Computer Science conferences, journals, or publications accepting human-subject research conducted without IRB approval?
The lack of approval was due to using the Wizard of Oz method, which, despite being industry-standard, requires some deception.
Exactly 10 years ago, at age 18, I left Michigan to perform as an idol in Japan. It's been a great journey since!
Happy New Year 🎇
10年前の今日、18歳でミシガン州出て、日本でアイドルを始めました。この10年、本当に色々あったけど、めっちゃ濃い旅でした!

This is the kind of liberal smugness that got him elected.
People are poor with little sense of agency. The establishment has left them behind. While I don't agree with election results people care far more about the price of eggs and gas than other arbitrary culture war issues.
I had nearly identical thought to this last week, but I'm unsure if starting these 'fractal loops' in 1968 is accurate.
1920 feels about right in the American context, with 1968 being a point where we may see more obvious similarities.
not for me. I dont claim it 🪬
why now? feels kinda late
If you don’t follow @aminav.bsky.social you are missing out. The original “Kabukicho” idol, a consultant for #TokyoVice and a witty iconoclast—she’s great. Her posts are eclectic but I always come away enlightened or entertained
Amina is a force of nature.
