“But our true problem is about the economy and gender roles, about individualism and people’s fear of living with and depending on others, about the lack of infrastructure and an absent welfare state, and so much more.”
Hot damn this is good. Pulls things together in a way that makes so much sense.

I wrote about how its not a population crisis and it’s not a loneliness crisis… open.substack.com/pub/sarahste...
And I was touched by how the audience – which were nearly all women – were so invested and curious about the problems of social atrophy and social reproduction.
I was so impressed too by the way that even an “apolitical” social institution like this does the work of social knitting-together, with roles and committees for everyone. (particularly nice everyone has a little badge + new members wear a blue ribbon so people make an effort to go talk to them.)
from this small institution of social reproduction/upkeep-ing, a much larger reading group was eventually generated and they now invite speakers to come talk about their books every Wednesday morning.
(It’s in such high demand that there 250 person waitlist! A whole other club could be formed!)
I had a beautiful time this morning talking to a very large reading group. It didn’t always used to be reading group—it was founded in the 60s for moms who needed a place to take their kids on Wednesday mornings to escape isolation and catch a parenting break while keeping their minds stimulated...

spent all day yesterday at the #FightingFascistFeelings antifascist workshop led by @sarahsteinlubrano.bsky.social & @maxhaiven.bsky.social and it was fantastic; lots of thoughtful engagement with frameworks and theory, lots of big picture stuff and establishing frameworks.
It’s helpful for illustrating an idea but I agree could be improved
New piece up! “if social life and communal life are inconvenient, doing upkeep alone is also incredibly inconvenient. Perhaps even more inconvenient, just inconvenient in ways that are harder for us to recognise in the moment, or to properly attribute to our isolation.”

Come for the data and theory, stay to dream up better ways of keeping each other going, together.
Blown away by @piercepenniless.bsky.social conversation with @sarahsteinlubrano.bsky.social on the @lrb.co.uk podcast. So much to think about.

‘Once you move past that liberal myth of the marketplace of ideas, all kinds of very interesting things emerge, some of which might be useful – but first you have to become disillusioned.’

this is a great, useful conversation, highly recommend & have a hold on lubrano's book at the library already.
Loved this conversation between @piercepenniless.bsky.social and @sarahsteinlubrano.bsky.social on (among other things) the importance of social relationships in political organising, what cognitive science has to offer left-wing movements, and how we can begin to rebuild the public sphere
This was a delight!
Excellent turnout and conversation on our panel “Is Democracy under Threat from Oligarchs and Corporate Capture?” at the Oxford Literary Festival today with @oliverbullough.bsky.social @sarahsteinlubrano.bsky.social and @stephenlaw.bsky.social
my good and brilliant friend @sarahsteinlubrano.bsky.social and Max Havens are hosting three day intensive workshop in Toronto for those deeply engaged in projects that are pushing back against the rising authoritarian, reactionary, and fascist elements of society.

- why AI could make things worse, and even make isolated people delusional
- how isolation might be fueling societal distrust, brain by brain and neighborhood by neighborhood
- some ideas about what we (all) can do
Come for the science, stay for the social theory.
Together we’ll explore:
- why isolated people get suspicious of their friends, family, and neighbors-but warmer towards their pets!
- why isolation often doesn’t lead to loneliness and why that’s deeply troubling
