Screen capture from a map of urban trees in Halifax. It shows mostly a mix of maples, oaks, elms and lindens along the streets. But Downtown Halifax has almost no trees except along the waterfront.
Screen capture from urban trees of Halifax. It shows Spryfield and regions, and it is clear that the trees are different, with mostly callery pears, pines and birches (compared to oaks, elms and maples in across the Northwest Arm.)
Urban trees maintained by @hfxgov.bsky.social, mapped by @justbartek.ca. While it doesn't document ALL trees, patterns can be seen. Downtown HFX & Woodside appear to be relatively tree-less. Tree species planted each side of Northwest Arm are different. π§π³π²ππ justbartek.ca/hfxtrees/ #Halisky
Thanks to a generous donation, the Nature Trust is proud to announce the protection of 97 acres of forested land and shoreline on Long Island, along the northeastern shore of the Bras dβOr Lake. Read more about Long Island here: nsnt.ca/blog/long-is...

βOver the last 20 years, @ncccnc.bsky.social has restored native habitat on former agricultural fields & modified lands in Norfolk County, southern Ontario. All that conservation work set the stage for our research.β

A light mauve jellyfish floats delicately in shallow waters with a pebbly bottom
Belated #FieldworkFriday post - doing some fieldwork yesterday I saw literally hundreds of these Mauve Stinger Jellyfish in the shallows. A new species for me, and so pretty!
Make plans to visit Pjila'si, now on view at the Museum of Natural History. More than just a gallery, it's an interactive space that celebrates Mi'kmaw culture. Come to engage, learn, and reflect on the knowledge, skills, and adaptability of the Mi'kmaw people throughout history and to this day.
The buff-tip moth (Phalera bucephala) has mastered a very particular kind of camouflage.
When they close their wings up, they resemble a broken twig.
Native to large parts of Europe, there's regional pattern variation that reflects the local tree species. This one best resembles birch twigs?
A small, duck-like bird cruises through the water.
An adult grebe with wet, matted feathers is swimming in a marsh, surrounded by three fluffy chicks.
The Horned Grebe is a petite picture of poise and perfection. Not a feather out of place, she glides and dives with the grace of a ballet dancer. Until, that is, the children arrive. π§΅πͺΆ
Omg. I've been pondering how to plan food for a group field trip to a remote site. Enter my sibling, who does Burning Man. Sent me a spreadsheet with easy bulk recipes scalable to group size, including how to coordinate people helping with cooking! And the comments in the sheet are hilarious.

As we head into a new week, please remember that your best is good enough. Try to not compare yourself to others, and donβt be misguided by other peopleβs material things or status. Those things matter not. If you can live each day with kindness, you are the richest soul. Rest well, my friends. π
I'm sure many I know here remember Sheila from our days on X. I'm so sad to read this news. Her advocacy influenced my thinking and was part of the inspiration for my pollinators' garden.
What a loss to her family, community, bumblebees and science.

BSky added a feature that allows people to be notified every time you post. A fine feature!
By default, it's set to allow anyone to do this. If you are prone to stalkers though:
*Under Privacy and Security settings, you can change this to only allow people you follow back to use this.*
I can't even describe to you how absolutely mind-blowingly awesome it is to finally have full reign to make this Cree course a reality. Holy crapballs.

Hope you feel better soon! My partner and I had it last month. While we've mostly recovered, the lingering cough is really annoying.
Please support if you can! π¦
I was a scholarship winner last year and I can personally say, these initiatives make an incredible difference when it comes to pursuing our careers, dreams, and passions.
Super thankful for these initiatives and for all those who donate!
Meet the mottled duskywing β an endangered butterfly once found across central Canada. Now rare due to habitat loss, NCC and partners have been restoring more open habitats with native plants & prescribed burns to help it (and other pollinators) thrive. #InsectAppreciationDay β¨
What do we gain when we restore boglands? Biodiversity, drought and fire prevention, cleaner water, long-term carbon storage, and ecosystems that inspire you to redefine beauty. Save bogs, save ourselves.

A beautiful male Blackburnian Warbler singing.
An eastern foxsnake on a log.
A woman at Biggest Week told me that the Eastern Foxsnake is the Blackburnian Warbler of the snakes and it was the kind of sentence that I both completely understood and realized would only make sense to a microscopic group of people of whom I'm a proud member
This sent me on a bit of an etymology rabbit hole - it's amazing how many languages we get bird names from.
Cormorant comes from bastardized Latin, corvus marinus, meaning sea raven.
Gull comes from Welsh / Breton βgwylan.β
Eider comes from Old Norse βaetharβ, meaning duck.
