Each setting includes some D&D ideas and excludes others. So the "sales pitch" is probably about the ingredients and how they are mixed.

As for the question "how might a new setting distinguish itself from the wealth of existing settings?"

If you group settings you can see common themes:
* Settings using ideas from Europe (Mystara, GH, DL, FR),
* Settings using non-European ideas (KT, AQ, Maztica),

Better use of the Guild Adept concept could allow for the creation of "B-Team D&D Campaign Settings" that go straight to Print on Demand format.

Better use of the Hasbro Pulse concept could allow fans who like "experimental" settings to fund PoD products, online freebies or Free RPG Day items.

The current 5e business model appears to require high volumes of sales. That works against products that could expand out a new setting that could capture a small-but-loyal following.

Selling off niche IPs could break the stalemate, but stops that IP being part of the D&D story.

FINDING MINOR D&D WORLDS AND D&D MINI-SETTINGS DISCUSSIONS AT THE PIAZZA

D&D repeatedly gets minor Dungeons & Dragons worlds or mini-settings that explore ideas, but most of these ideas are abandoned quickly.

One of the challenges of D&D, as a commercial product line is the "too many settings killed TSR" mantra that came from the 2e design team and that makes WotC cautious about campaign setting proliferation.

Innovation is great. But familiar settings support long-term campaigns.

There are several competing ideas for a D&D universe (or D&D Multiverse) including Frank Mentzer's BECMI cosmology, The Great Wheel, Spelljammer's crystal spheres, Planescape's update to the Great Wheel and various bespoke ideas in specific campaign settings.

"Schrodinger's D&D rules" give us science fiction elements, psionics, gunpowder, ceremorphosis, bloodlines and ancient non-science fiction multiverse empires that either exist or do not exist, depending on what D&D books you choose to open.

D&D both evolves and/or reboots itself.

Dave Arneson evolved the Blackmoor game out of wargaming and Gary Gygax turned that into the first marketable version of D&D. Battlesystem brought back wargaming aspects that were abandoned only to be brought back again as Chainmail and the D&D Miniatures game.

Dungeons & Dragons is over 50 years old and is more of a multinational extended family of RPG rules and campaign settings than one singular roleplaying game.

The current game gets called 5th Edition, but isn't. There are multiple unnumbered D&D rules, including cut down "starter rules".
