Opinion: The Trump administration is turning back the clock on refugee protections The White House is undermining decades of progress to rectify the race-based exclusions that characterized early international refugee law

Opinion piece @theglobeandmail.com with Laura Madokoro @carleton.ca

The Trump administration’s suggestions for a privileged form of asylum for white
and politically aligned refugees is not new – it is a throwback, and one that
undermines decades of progress.

In his campaign launch speech Poilievre blames violence and disorder on "open borders." Canada has never had open borders but even if you think it has brought in too many migrants (temporary and permanent) migrants are not linked to violence or crime.

Why the language of loopholes should be avoided if Trump cracks down on the U.S.-Canada border by Shaye Ganam Dr. Shauna Labman, executive director, Global College, University of Winnipeg

Spoke more on the Canada-US border this morning on 630 CHED / QR 770 explaining why we need to be attentive to our commitments to refugees and their right to claim asylum and the difference between sealing and securing a border: megaphone.link/CORU1875078726

Well worth a full read. I have been studying refugee sponsorship for almost 2 decades and this announcement is both predictable and unprecedented. @ianvh.bsky.social does a fantastic job of giving a comprehensive picture of the program and the consequences:

Temporary pause on intake of refugee sponsorship applications from groups of five and community sponsors - Canada.ca Temporary pause on intake of refugee sponsorship applications from groups of five and community sponsors

Appalling news from the Cnd Gov’t on refugee sponsorship. I haven’t yet introduced myself but I write on refugees & the relationship b/w asylum & resettlement, warning we need to ensure the door is open to asylum as discretionary resettlement programs are vulnerable.

Danielle Smith wants Alberta border patrol?
FACTS!
Along Montana border (with Alberta and Sask):
3 lb fentanyl last year, 1 lb meth.
Fewer than dozen individual (including migrants) "encounters" per month.
"urgent" provincial sheriff patrols, for this?

Why the ‘language of loopholes’ should be avoided if Trump cracks down on the Canada-U.S. border Focus on supposed ‘loopholes’ that allow migrants to claim asylum echoes Canada’s longstanding preoccupation with how people negotiate the border.

New commentary from @meggaucher.bsky.social & me on Canada-US border & the dangerous language of loopholes. A sneak peak from our chapter in @emmettmacfarlane.com & @katepuddister.bsky.social forthcoming book Disciplinary Divides in the Study of Law & Politics!
