My favorite is the Scars of Velious era Everquest as preserved by Project 1999. The idea of the 'shared world' in an MMO is almost a lost art by now, but the sense of exploration you get in the zones and AD&D inspired dungeons and the interdependence of players makes it feel like a real adventure.

Unfortunately you're right. There have been some rather bitter disappointments over the years. But for every series that doesn't know how to write lesbians or has bigoted opinions about 'correcting' lesbianism, there are ten more that have true lesbian excellence! Yuritopia is not so far away.
