The college has sold off a huge chunk of its real estate ("right sizing"). There are maybe 120 students at this point, only half of whom are in residence. The rest are out in the world doing internships, which is a core part of their curriculum. But there was a real sense of shared mission.
re: Hampshire, I spent the past wknd at Antioch, a progressive SLAC that closed in 2008 but reopened in 2011 after a group of upset alumni were able to buy it from its parent institution. It's a hard road & a super unusual place. Will it last? Who knows! But a model of one path forward.
