This Is Just To Say

I have turned off
the AI features
that were in
the update

and which
you were probably
hoping
to monetize

Fuck you
they were stupid
so unnecessary
and so annoying

@lmariewood.bsky.social's got an upcoming novella that knocked my socks off! Many HWA friends leap to mind:
@jeswrites.bsky.social,
@samanthabwriter.bsky.social,
@joncarrollthomas.bsky.social,
@bennetteharding.bsky.social, just a ton of great writers are out there right now.

Eventually I’m just going to get an acceptance from sheer volume of submissions. The system will not be able to bear the weight of everything I keep sending out

Fieldwork: How I Prep For a Workshop I love a good writing workshop. The deep-dive seminars, the writing exercises, the conversation and feedback with and from other writers interested in similar things… I’ve got another workshop coming up this May: The Author’s Journey intensive novel/la workshop with Crystal Lake Publishing.If you want to take this yourself, I recognize that the price tag can be prohibitive. They do offer pricing plans, and the workshop offers a lot of bang for your buck.

I'm starting an intensive writing workshop soon, so I wrote about what I've been doing to prepare for it: setting personal goals, planning my wordcount, and getting early feedback.

The latter I’m afraid! Based on the comments I’ve seen from people it sounds like “man-fantasy,” as opposed to all that other woke fantasy garbage. (I’m assuming, as I also do not *really* want to know lol)

I've been under a rock all day working and writing and apparently missed "Mantasy"
what the fuck

*sigh*
If your Kickstarter video/image is AI, I won't back it.
If your book has an AI cover, I won't read it.
If you're a public supporter of AI use for creative work, I will unfollow you.
I cannot stress enough how offensive I find AI use in the arts. It is outright theft, it is lazy, it is gross.

To be clear: The only machine aids to my creative process, now and forever, are for spelling and grammar. In researching, outlining, mood board-ing, writing, editing, submitting, and promoting, I will always work to actively refuse the intrusion of so-called AI

Unfinished Clips: Story Prompts, Volume I Here are twenty-five prompts for your writing pleasure and convenience! These are geared primarily toward genre writers, but use them as you will. If you end up publishing a story written with one of these prompts, I would love to hear about it! The only gift the water gave was a secret. The bells are a source of fear: They summon the Spirit, and when it comes, it conquers.

Need something to jumpstart your writing? I came up with 25 prompts (leaning toward horror, but flexible!) that made me want to start something new.

Guest post: This Is A First Draft Title And I Am OK With That The most important thing to remember about a first draft is that you should never, ever worry about it being good enough. The purpose of a first draft is to exist. That’s it. It is the initial, rough manifestation of your idea, and expecting it to be any more of that is going to cause pain down the line. A first draft does not have to be perfect, nor should you expect it to be.

I'm so grateful to the legendary Richard Dansky for helping to inaugurate The Scrawler Tapes with his words of wisdom about drafting!

Day 2 of my craft blog launch week! I wanted to talk about a not-writing part of my writing process that is nevertheless critical to my inspiration, my ability to keep writing, and my mental health.

This is incredible

I've seen people trying to defend it today by saying "No, no, I just use it to brainstorm, bounce ideas, I do the actual writing" and with all the kindness in the world I need to tell you: if there is a stage of writing you are not good at, you need to get good, not use the plagiarism machine.

Intellectual Scaffolding: Not-Writing, “Productivity” and Rest Today I want to talk about one of the foundational concepts that powers my writing work: intellectual scaffolding. It is the support structure that surrounds your writing work—the ideas, beliefs, politics, inspiration, and values that inform the writing. It is something that always exists around our creative labors, whether we think about it or not. I find value in cultivating my scaffolding, and in so doing I have thought a great deal about productivity and mental rest.

Today I'm talking about a topic near and dear to me, which I learned from my dissertation advisor: Intellectual Scaffolding.

I’ve taken a class on this topic from her before and it was awesome! Highly recommended.

My cousins kid (how is it possible that baby is going to college?) did a NASA robotics project and so got to watch the Artemis launch. She took a video of it and while it’s cool she was there I am also utterly charmed by a cluster of teenagers gushing that “this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen”!
