Connect Bay Area organizers pushing for sales tax to fund public transit The solution proponents hope to put before voters is $1 billion in yearly funding for public transit, through a half-cent sales tax in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties, and a one-cent sales tax in San Francisco.

Bay Area transit is at a crossroads. SB 63 aims to secure $1B yearly to prevent major service cuts, but debate continues over new taxes vs efficiency. With 186,000+ signatures needed by June 3, the debate is clear: act now, or risk a system many rely on.

Those in San Francisco would be asked to approve a full percentage point that would also help Muni, which desperately needs money to run the city’s local buses, subway trains and street cars.

Voters in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties would be asked to add an extra half a percentage point to their sales tax rates.

A campaign committee is gathering signatures to qualify the sales tax measure in five Bay Area counties. The revenue would support Caltrain, the commuter rail line from San Francisco to the Silicon Valley, as well as local bus and light-rail networks.
