Millions of Europeans are not buying the myth that fossil fuels keep them safe.
A new poll across six EU countries finds two in five people want to speed up renewables even if bills rise in the short term, because they see clean energy as protection from war-driven oil and gas shocks.

"It's the economic models, stupid"
Could hugely underestimating the benefits of investments in renewables, batteries and energy savings be leading the EU to fumble its response to the energy crisis?
All while Europe spends ~€400bn on fossil fuel imports each year

What would have happened if the world had turned to #renewables earlier?
If, say, oil companies hadn’t been working for decades to slow down action on climate change?
We would be in a very different position.

The oil and gas companies profiting from war must be made to pay to protect vulnerable people from rising prices
This money must also be used to reduce the EU's dependence on fossil fuels – boosting renewables, insulation, public transport, electrification – to avoid future crises like this
Economy and finance ministers from Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Austria are asking the EU for a tax on energy surplus profits to curb price increases. #EuropeNews

If governments and the EU had kept their Paris climate agreement promises to limit global heating to 1.5°C, we wouldn't be in this mess
AND the global oil & gas trade would be less of a weapon of war
AND people's energy bills would be lower
It's time to stop fossil fuels and go 100% renewable
BREAKING: The EU Parliament's trade committee has voted in favour of the EU-US trade deal that would lock Europe into imports of US oil and gas
Handing more power to Trump and the US fossil fuel industry while breaches of international law spike energy prices is a disaster

Illustration comparing fossil fuels to renewables
Spain built lots of wind and solar in recent years.
It paid off: prices are rising there too, but much, much less than in countries more dependent on fossil gas.
Renewables shield people. Fossil gas makes them pay more.

Oil and gas companies, backed by Trump are now lobbying the EU to pause its methane law.
Shocked? The fossil fuel industry doesn't want to be regulated.

Great from our colleagues in Lebanon
"The current crisis is a tragic, undeniable argument for why we must accelerate the transition to renewable energy"
Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..
Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy.
This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis.
44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.
Fossil fuel stocks are exploding in response to the war on Iran.
Who stands to benefit? The richest of the rich.
Who stands to lose? All of us who have to pay higher prices for energy and a new round of sellers' inflation.
This is a good moment for Europe & UK to remember that they can stick up wind and solar, insulates houses, far quicker than they can find new gas in e.g. North Sea
If you're chasing more gas, it's now a case of which unreliable regime you prefer to depend on

Another war. Another fossil shock.
As violence escalates in the Middle East, civilians face devastating consequences. But the energy fallout is already hitting Europe. Gas prices up 50% in hours.
This is what fossil fuel dependence looks like. 🧵
It's crazy how reliant the world's entire energy system is on one body of water, the Strait of Hormuz, just 20 nautical miles across at its narrowest, and situated in one of the most volatile regions on Earth. Here are the countries most dependent on oil&gas through the strait.
well now

Europe is bracing for a surge in energy prices from a prolonged conflict in the Middle East that would put more pressure on the EU's struggling economy and expose its near-total reliance on foreign fossil fuels.
What's going on with the EU's deregulation agenda?👀

EU leaders meeting today say they want Europe to be stronger, competitive and independent
So how does replacing Putin’s gas for Trump’s gas, while pushing back on commitments to power our homes and factories with cheap, home-grown renewables put Europe on a path to energy independence?
