I condemn Russia’s attacks on #Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The humanitarian consequences of prolonged power outages are grave. @coe.int member states need to intensify urgent humanitarian support.👇

.@coe @commissionerhr.coe.int defends the human rights and values-based model that has grounded #Europe & other democracies for 80 years. In the face of tectonic geopolitical shifts, @commissionerhr.coe.int argues we need more #humanrights, not less.
An urgent shift from a transactional to a people-centred approach to peace-making for #Ukraine is needed.
A just and lasting #peace must be based on #HumanRights, justice and accountability.
Russia's escalating attacks underscore the need to prioritise victims.

We must preserve Europe's #HumanRights system; be evidence-based, rejecting false claims & dangerous associations of migration w. criminality. Uphold the law & the universality of rights. Respect for everyone's rights secures a safe state. It is not a zero-sum game. #ECHR www.coe.int/en/web/commi...
With @coe.int Steering Cttee on #HumanRights, I raised concern over contagion of attacks on independence & effectiveness of some Europe's #NHRIs & Ombuds institutions. As pillars of democratic architecture, they protect human well-being, often in brave & innovative ways.

Delivered a lecture at @uniofgalway.bsky.social on “The Essential Role of Human Rights to Build a Better Future” — reflecting on how we can embed #HumanRights at the heart of today’s global challenges. Read my speech

The situation is nothing short of dire. In my #IEVilnius2025 speech today, I addressed the ‘perfect storm’ facing #LGBTI people, including rising populism and a weakening political centre ground. Now is the time for fierce determination.

Attending the ILGA-Europe conference today provided an amazing opportunity to catch up with civil society working with and for #LGBTI people and learn about their concerns. I will play my part in standing up for #HumanRights. #IEVilnius2025
Kicked off my Germany visit with meetings at the German Institute for #HumanRights and with civil society to gain perspectives. Thanks for the warm welcome and insightful dialogue!
Great to be in Venice! I outlined my four priorities and how the #CoE #VeniceCommission and my office serve as complementary #HumanRights actors. While they develop the legal standards, I focus on seeing the law applied and honoured on the ground.

Read my two letters to the #UK:
1. Protests: I call for a review of the legal framework and the reconsideration of provisions in the Crime & Policing Bill that could restrict freedom of assembly.
2. Trans people: I warn against exclusion&zero-sum approaches

The situation for LGBTI communities across Europe is worrying and worsening. Today in Finland, I'm with Nordic Council ministers for gender equality and LGBTI. I encourage them to stand up for the #HumanRights of #LGBTI people and offer solidarity and support to them and their organisations.
Rich exchanges with the Nordic Council of Ministers for Gender Equality and LGBTI on the astonishing breadth of anti-LGBTI backlash across the Council of Europe region, and their strong commitment to ensuring that int'l #HumanRights standards are upheld, and civil society is supported.
Had a valuable exchange with PACE_Equality. I stressed the importance of generating attention on the #HumanRights of Roma & Travellers across Europe: we must listen to and work with them, particularly women and girls as main drivers of change. More👇

I’m closely following events in Serbia, where human rights concerns persist. I deplore the police’s disproportionate force in Valjevo yesterday evening and reiterate my call on the authorities to avoid excessive force, end arbitrary arrests, and de-escalate the situation
Ahead of Alaska talks about Ukraine, I call for anchoring peace negotiations in human rights. Read my statement ⬇️ bit.ly/46WJ1ba

Two-year prison sentence given to Georgian journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli is disproportionate & raises serious issues under the ECHR. I reiterate my call on authorities to release her & urge them to ensure that journalists can work freely without interference and respect of freedom of expression.
Concerned about the arrest & detention of Enes Hocaoğulları, Congress youth delegate in respect of #Türkiye, following his intervention at plenary sitting of Congress. I ask Turkish authorities to release him immediately & safeguard freedom of expression & work of HRDs www.coe.int/en/web/congr...
Externalisation entails human rights risks and these cannot be brushed aside for political expediency, writes @commissionerhr.coe.int in a reaction to a recent editorial by @economist.com

Srebrenica.
A genocide.
A name for the unspeakable.
But also, a promise:
To never forget the more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys who lost their lives.
30 years on, remembrance is resistance.
The @coe.int stands against the hatred that led to this atrocity.
#Balkaninsight about the commemoration ceremony in Srebrenica today: balkaninsight.com/2025/07/11/t... #Srebrenica30
Denial of the #genocide in #Srebrenica is gaining strength - flying in the face of multiple judgments by several international courts. Survivors & civil society are powerfully voices of truth, but politicians fail their responsibility to work for peaceful societies www.nytimes.com/2025/07/11/o...
Council of Europe @commissionerhr.coe.int calls for truly learning lessons from the genocide in Srebrenica and acting today to prevent further atrocities. It is of paramount importance to heed the warnings of civil society & protect #humanrights defenders. #Srebrenica30
30 years after #Srebrenica genocide we remember the over 8372 men & boys killed. Their lives were the cost of silence. Civil society warned the world but was ignored. Let's learn lessons from the past & honour victims by defending those who speak out today #Srebrenica30
