I agree. It does seem like some puns are rare birds spotted from afar before zipping away, while others are wordganisms bred so monomaniacally that they can't survive in the world for more than a few seconds.
A potentially vapid question (for @benwurgaft.bsky.social): Are puns more like wild animals that we momentarily trap, or are they like domesticated animals (and if so, what are their wild forebears)?
