Why do the Japanese like their buns askew (2026)
I had the pleasure of chatting with Momo from @heartofthedeernicorn.com about designing What Should We Have Tomorrow? and Ithaca in the Cards: Second Expedition, and teased the premise of Infinite Seas Under the Same Stars. Check out the full interview here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0XA...
Went to get coffee from a small cafe operating at the market. He had Nat King Cole and Dean Martin playing on the speakers, so I got to wait in some good vibes despite sweating like heck in the humid morning.
It gets quite complex towards the end as it piles on some heady sci-fi concepts, but that is, also, part of its strengths, because ultimately it's the human heart and living and connections that collectively drive significant change. A clever show with a lot of heart and lovable characters.
The poster for Just A Bit Espers ("Chotto Dake Esper")
Really liked Just A Bit Espers, which takes that fantasy of power and control that comes with anime-esque ESP and subverts it in smart, satisfying ways. Our heroes only have "just a bit" of power and could really only affect change in small ways - expanded into a strong, resonant central theme.
Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight
I have Sunbringer and Faithbreaker to get next, but I'm in no hurry. I still have a (growingly large) backlog of books, and I think I'm in the mood for some Sayaka Murata.
The cover for Hannah Kaner's Godkiller
Finished Hannah Kaner's Godkiller during the course of my trip. What a great read! A unique fantasy world, a cast of great characters, a fair bit of intrigue and mystery, and who doesn't like a good quest with broken characters finding healing and solace and growth with each other?
rites those beings invisible to most . . . . . . who are perhaps too small to attract much notice. well . . . someone must still remember. 4 panels of a snail getting ghost rites
little daoist comic. he has a name but i'm holding onto it for now.
Headline on Hollywood Reporter that reads ”Paddington 4, Escape From New York' Reboot in the Works”
I misread the headline as one movie and got very excited for a moment…
It's 14 April in Singapore, so Happy #PortfolioDay!
I've written prose, comics, narrative podcasts, and a text-based game. One of my goals is to get a Marvel Comics credit—even just a short story—but I know I have to prove myself, so I'm looking for North American comics work.
Here's my website:
This infuriating attitude shows up on the bookshelves in learning environments, too. We expect girls to empathize with boys, but we kneecap every opportunity to let boys empathize with girls. And look where we are.
MIDNIGHT SPECIAL came out in that weird period before mainstream criticism widely accepted horror and genre weirdness as being in the same conversation as other great cinema and just got forgotten. If you’ve never seen it, you have a new favorite film waiting out there for you. A work of genius.
Guys, has anyone posted the YES, MADAM (Corey Yuen, 1985) final fight scene on here yet? Extremely important for the website to run properly.
In case folks didn't know: This is also how Wes Anderson has been moving, lately.
If you've been noticing Wes' last few movies have been EPECIALLY Wes Anderson-y? He has a patron. A billionaire who has basically said "I love your art, do what you want, I'll pay for it."
Eugene is recovering well, alert and joking and will go home in a few days. A big deal accident but we will be very grateful this good guy genius will recover.
A poor illustration of a corner store cafe with red bricks. Strewn all around are various pens.
Loaded up the Kakuno with Troublemaker ink my wife previously bought (Tuslob Buwa) and it's such a joy to write with.
Sadly my handwriting remains abysmal.
A Pilot Kakuno fountain pen with clear demonstrator barrel, a clear purplish cap, and a CON-70N converter inside. The pen is sitting on a small Campus notebook with a colorful horse illustration, which is itself sitting on a bigger Campus notebook
Last weekend, a Kinokuniya held a tiny event about journaling, and you get to go mix and match your own Pilot Kakuno pen, which I did (or rather, I just trusted my wife's impeccable taste). So here's a fountain pen I hope to use until it disintegrates or I perish in the post-apocalypse.
Okay. Lots to do, wife is rather unwell, and I have some errands to run before next week. Sure feels like the hull is leaking like mad, but I think the band still has time to play.
Exoplanet explorer contractual regrets.
CLAYFACE ink sketch by Dan McDaid. He looks like he's on his way to work!
I wanted it to look like CLAYFACE had a hammer for a hand, but it looks like he's on his way to work
13. In short, all writing is political, because all writers are political, and so are all readers. We can't help ourselves in either case. It doesn't matter if you're writing a narrow polemic or an attempted blockbuster. It's okay to be comfortable with these facts; they exist even if you're not.
Final Fantasy Meme Balthier: Listen up fives a ten is speaking Balthier: Fran, can we talk, one ten to another Fran: I'm an eleven but go on
art gallery: You finish that painting of Frodo and Gollum?
Artist: Sure did boss, real fuckin sexy just like you asked.
A scene in Shoshimin. Kobato and Osanai are barefoot in wide but shallow river, with a bridge in the background
What I truly love is how Shoshimin integrates its characters with the city it's set in (Gifu), transporting them to random locations as they muse and explain, so it's always visually striking during exposition-heavy scenes. There's a great sense of place, much like Hyouka (with Takayama).
The poster-banner for Shoshimin: how to Become Ordinary
Caught up with Shoshimin! I kinda liked it better when it was simpler and all about solving how one person made tasty hot chocolate with just 3 cups (the series' best mystery imo), but this is a truly intriguing and bold series about an unlikely relationship between two extraordinary people.
