Mendeleev dreamt up a table.
150 years later, we are still filling in the gaps
– and finally colouring it properly. [No rainbow gradients were harmed.] 🧪⚛️

🌌 How fast is the Universe expanding?
A new international study, born from an ISSI Breakthrough Workshop, offers the sharpest answer yet:
PRESS RELEASE: www.issibern.ch/hubble-const... 🔭
@eso.org @nasaupdates.bsky.social @stsci.edu @noirlabastro.bsky.social @mpi-astro.bsky.social and others!
Two contour plots of continuous temperature measurements in sea ice, snow, air, and seawater (Hammer et al., 2026; doi:10.1029/2025JC022738), shown using a rainbow-style colormap.
There are many colorblind-friendly, perceptually uniform colormaps (e.g., cmocean, @fabiocrameri.ch), yet many papers at @agu.org still use rainbow variants.
Not just aesthetics — they can create artificial structures (see plot).
Better options exist.

Your favourite graphic just got updated:
Here’s the colour-vision deficiency friendly periodic table of elements:
s-ink.org/periodic-tab...
Now including electron configurations and featuring a refined design. ✨
I had the pleasure to (finally) meet @franckghomsi.bsky.social in person and talk to him about his work, Global South perspective, and academia. 😇
QGIS users: ATTENTION!
We now have a convenient #QGIS plugin to integrate the latest version of the Scientific colour maps directly into the style manager: plugins.qgis.org/plugins/scie...
Shout-out and big thanks to Silvain Théry. ⭐️
Happy mapping, everyone! #UseBatlow 🐡
In what format do you do the best science?
- Rhetorical question, because I see the answer day in, day out 👇
I had a school class over at the International Space Science Institute. 👫👭👬👫👭
Here‘s what I learned from their feedback about Science Communication. 👇
I had the pleasure to talk to these two inspiring and kind (truly the best combination!) space scientists and witness first hand how science bridges the generational gap.
For the latest ISSIcast, I talked to Ben Poulter, former Deputy Director for Greenhouse Gas Measurements and Monitoring at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. 👇
Assemble your dream team and come collaborate at ISSI!
Free coffee, meals, and hotel room included. 💥
Persistent river heatwaves are emerging worldwide under climate change
By the 2090s, nearly half of the world’s rivers could be in a year-round heatwave state, threatening ecosystems and communities, disproportionately in low-income regions, such as the Congo basin

Earth's internal heat flow from the core, mantle and crust to the surface through conduction, convection, and advection. Figure by Fabio Crameri available openly from https://s-ink.org/earth-internal-heat-flow
From Earth’s warm heart to its surface glow,
Heat flows like time, constant in its flow, ~46 TW from below.
New year, new graphics to make hidden mysteries known,
Open, clear, and accessible to now call our own!

What happens when world-class solar scientists meet a cozy bar in Bern?
ISSI teamed up with Astronomy on Tap Bern for an unforgettable evening with 3 amazing talks, a full house, and even a debate on whether the heliosphere is shaped like a croissant 🥐, or not.

The latest version of the Scientific colour maps is now available for ArcGIS Pro, thanks to Craig Williams. 🫶

…and if you want to skip the details, here is a nice summary for it by @uofgnews.bsky.social:
bsky.app/profile/uofg...
Plots of the viscosity for (a) a model with a viscosity increase at 1,000 km depth, separate from the phase change at 660 km depth (b) versus slab tip flattening for an oceanic overriding plate, highlighting the combined influence of the continent and the viscosity structure of the mantle in the dynamics of deep slabs.
In this new study, @geoniette.bsky.social has done a fabulous job with this work on the dynamics of deep, sinking plate tectonic slabs. 🌍💡

✨ Meet @issibern.ch at the exhibition of #EPSCDPS2025, discover their amazing science and space projects!
Come say hi, if you are at #EPSCDPS2025! 👋
Arrows on ISSI blue background.
It is the word of the town.
ISSI is on tour again.
If you are too, come say hi during this week’s #EPSC2025 here in Helsinki! – You know where to go, just follow the blue.

😬 I give seminars and workshops on the importance of science-proof colour scales, if you ever want to turn graphics like these into scientifically accurate and readable visuals (also to colour-blind people).

I wrote a piece for @egu.eu about academic evaluation and how the resulting incentives for academics are destructive.
I think it can be done better. 🕸️
But only if you want it, too. 🫶

During the last 30 years, our telescopes improved and became more. We discover more of what lies beyond our sky.
Exoplanets, planets outside our solar system, might host life or tell us more about our own planet.
Here are 4999 of them perfectly to scale. 😮💨
Lovely paper out by Benjamin Hatchett about colour consistency in pyrocartography 🔥🗺️:

Thanks. We found some people and already made the videos for this year. Will keep you in mind for next year!
Such a great short course on different aspects of #DataViz at #EGU today! The room was absolutely packed — people were sitting on the floor (hey, @egu.eu maybe consider a bigger room next time?😉) And it's always a pleasure attending @fabiocrameri.ch's presentations!
#endrainbow, yep.
And one more:

Started creating some content for @egu.eu again.
Really enjoy talking to academics and hear about their career and views. 👇
