Since people are taking the Artemis launch to be the thing that reassures us that we can still do cool things, I'm a bit annoyed.

Democracy is not a silver bullet, it requires constant engagement. Would you really want RFK to have direct and total control over all drug approvals? Should we privatize drug approvals? :)

Platner is a moron of the Nazi kind and I'm sure whatever he is saying is born out of idiocy.
At the same time, it's absolutely a coherent left-wing view that medicine should be entirely in the public sector -- and thus private drug companies shouldn't exist.

In retrospect, the fact that systemd has its tentacles spread out across your OS and is thus significantly harder to swap out than a pure init system should always have been reason enough to never use systemd.

So all of the systemd hate was justified apparently...

Also, it wasn't a "British triumph"! It was an explicitly international triumph. I don't know why the BBC thinks their readership is so childish that they need to spin this nationalistic narrative to make the point that basic science ought to be funded.

Why is every other app advertising itself as "Duolingo but for X"? Has anyone had a positive experience with Duolingo?!

Anyone interested in gleaning true information from the internet is going to have to cultivate a trusted collection of sources rather than relying on search or social media. Dare we hope for a renaissance of the RSS reader?

People really need to stop being weird about AI. Like criticize but be cool about it? I think that's possible?

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.

It'd be a perfect way to remind the world of what Gandhi was about: yes, non-violence, but also excellent PR.

Can we not use "AI" as a replacement for "video games" or "computers" or "smart phones" to cry about how a new generation is different from ours?!

My prior credence in any statement strongly violating the "kids are alright" conjecture is very low. Very much like the kids, the conjecture has proved to be quite resilient.

Why are there so many brosphere podcasters copying Rogan's studio aesthetics but not enough particle physicists wearing all black?!

Yeah, I was thinking the same but there is nonetheless a broader trend of steady decline in crimes -- including those for which there is no alternative method that opened up since the 90s, e.g., the knife attacks that the quoted post is talking about.

Does the Catholic church support the inclusion of gay and queer people in the institution of marriage? Most religions are inherently right wing! I'm glad there are liberalizing forces within religions, but the whitewashing is a bit hard to swallow.

I think the title should have been "AI is not another abstraction because God does (should?) not play dice."!

Why is Google force-feeding me the AI slop *across the board*? ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ I don't need an AI answer when I am trying to look up an address or the working hours of a shop!
