A linguist friend told me a bit of interesting trivia the other day. In Latin, the 'vir' in Triumvirate (a political commission of three men in Ancient Rome) is a cognate of the Old English 'were', a term for an adult male human, which also forms part of the compound word 'werewolf' or man-wolf.
