We are delighted to be taking the reins and express our gratitude to both Brian Golding who began this service to the community in the mid-1980s and to @rdmpage.bsky.social who ran this account until now 👏

Two flies mating. The female has feather-like legs. The male is smaller. Both have red eyes, very long legs, pointy antennae.
A gift for you. Seen a few days after the first one.
Oh my! This is excellent! You've made my day! I'm surprised by the lack of a nuptial gift for the female to munch on. Is it common for the genus to not have this or is this a one-off?
Very cool! Where is this from? As far as I can gather the genus Porphyrochroa is described from the Amazon... Do you have pictures of the males from this species?
Always happy to see more Empids in my socials!
This looks unconscionable and needs to be more widely discussed.
Bless the librarians of Aberystwyth University for sending this blog out to their students: "Wait a Minute…What If I Don’t Want to Use AI?"

For those interested, a new version (v3.1.0) of poolfstat is now on CRAN, including new functions and updates, new stats (Fh, Fd, FdM) implemented in sliding.windows.fstat; and a revised vignette.

Led by my talented PhD student @justine-armg.bsky.social we’re running a #meta-analysis of #cross-sex-genetic-correlations in fitness components.
If you have unpublished data or know of studies that might not appear in a systematic search, please reach out, we’d love to include them!
Please share!
Amazing! Replication studies will now be accepted by Behavioral Ecology.
An important study maps how nerves control the Drosophila male reproductive tract, revealing two types of glutamatergic neurons that also release serotonin or octopamine.

Today start Whamageddon! The rules are simple, try to make it til Christmas without hearing Wham's original Last Christmas. Covers are safe but once you hear George, you're out. Last year I made it 3 days 😅
Good luck, we're all counting on you 😉✈️
A huge shout-out to @droseu.bsky.social. A truly fantastic group of people without whom this would not have been possible.
I posted a pre-print today. It's a big deal for me as it's the first paper as an independent PI. It's the culmination of 2 years worth of work and I'm really proud of it.
Nature suggests you use their "Manuscript Adviser" bot to get advice before submitting
I uploaded the classic Watson & Crick paper about DNA structure, and the Adviser had this to say about one of the greatest paper endings of the century:

#festamajordegràcia is concluded for @lcatmon.bsky.social it's been 1 more bucket list ✅️ to bring #evolution to one of the most important festivities of #Barcelona
Thanks #44Perill, @ajuntamentbcn.bsky.social #eseb2025 @sesbe-org.bsky.social and for the support and trust! Activities Summary 👇
We are in Bluesky and we are happy to share our two last consortium publications: the DrosEU expanded DEST dataset and a Continent-wide study of phenotypic differentiation among European #Drosophila melanogaster populations (1/7)
It was an absolute pleasure to have you!

Heads up: ignore samtools dot org, similarly minimap2 dot com and likely others. It's owned by a known phishing site and while the binaries they offer look valid currently (but note they may be serving us different binaries to others), that could change.
Ie: it's not us (Samtools team)! Be warned
This Saturday 13 September at 19:00 I’m giving a talk in the Linnaeus orangerie as part of the Culture night events. Stop by if you’re around! I heard there will be music and dance events at the gardens. www.uu.se/en/faculty/s...
FlyBase, a Drosophila database, will lose a third of its team in early October because the Harvard grant that covered the employees’ salaries was canceled. Scientists warn that losing FlyBase could devastate fly research.

🚨 Exciting news for #ESEB2025!
Join us in Barcelona for our symposium:
Cooperation, Conflict & the Evolution of Socially Transferred Materials (S08)
📅 Thursday, 21 Aug 2025
🕥 10:30–12:30 | 🕔 17:00–19:00 (Poster Session)
MassLive.com recently interviewed several Harvard FlyBase people and wrote this news article about the importance of FlyBase: tinyurl.com/4chpts9f
This is a super important resource provided by an amazing team of people. It's a travesty that it has come to this, but please consider supporting them in some way.
Excited to see our most recent MS finally out in the world. We used F1 female hybrids (of two behaviourally-isolated cricket species) to show that broad gene expression divergence in the brain underpins context-dependent divergence of female response to male sexual signals.
Former MSCA fellow for a project in evolutionary biology here, please get in touch if you want to ask questions about the process.
A graphic for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), showing a historical portrait of Marie Skłodowska-Curie overlaid with an image of four young researchers walking down a hallway. The European Commission logo is in the top left. Text reads: "Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – €404.3 million to support postdoctoral researchers”
Choose Science. Choose Europe.
A new Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025 call is now open.
With a budget of €404.3 million, it will support around 1,650 researchers from Europe and beyond.

The days of Google Docs are ending; we enter the age of Docs, made by France's Interministerial Directorate for Digital Affairs and Germany's Center for Digital Sovereignty of Public Administration.
We need more governments to collaborate on public software projects to achieve digital sovereignty.
