A cocktail in a rocks glass, with a lit candle behind it, trying to be artsy but ending up quite a mundane photo... But the drink is good!
Tonight's cocktail, because I finally got a bottle of Italicus:
Me, Myself, and I
1 oz Mezcal
1 oz Amaro Montenegro
1 oz Italicus
Stirred, poured over ice cubes, and garnished with blood orange peel (which I happened to have at hand)
Sounds a bit odd perhaps, but works!
I have data model socks from SqlDBM, but there's a typo in a fact table name and it bothers me greatly ๐
1 Max Planck length = 10^35 Min Planck lengths
I saw someone comment "acquisition is great, integration is difficult", which, yeah.
Two of my favourite flow states:
1. Playing a groovy bassline in a jam session
2. Solving type vs. instance problems in a complex data model on a whiteboard
Maybe I just have a weird brain, but the deep immersion and disappearance of the universe beyond the task at hand feel similar ๐ค
A San Francisco Treat cocktail in a coupe glass, with bottles of Averna, Fernet-Branca, and Dolin Dry - its ingredients.
For tonight's cocktail, I was having a Fernet feeling and thus thinking of a Toronto, but ended up making a San Francisco Treat. The ingredients are in the picture - equal parts! Flamed an orange peel on top.
I'm not sure if I'm getting 'squirrel' from this... More like a weird cross between a tennis shoe and a cleaning utensil?
Regardless, I wish the little guy well!
If you missed the announcement on LinkedIn yesterday, Helsinki Data Week (of which I'm happy to be one of the organizers) is coming back this year on the last week of October! It was loads of fun last year, and we have exciting plans for 2025... Stay tuned!

A Bijou cocktail served in a Nick & Nora glass
After a hearty Christmas meal, a good digestif is necessary. Went with a Bijou:
2.5 cl London Dry gin
3 cl sweet vermouth
1.5 cl green Chartreuse
1-2 dashes of orange bitters
Expressed & discarded a lemon peel, garnished with a Maraschino cherry.
Delicious! Merry Christmas all!
What can the 13th century Mongol conquests teach us about data & analytics?
Nothing much I suppose, but I am greatly enjoying the latest @fallofcivspod.bsky.social episodes while commuting to my clients' offices ๐
#databs (in many ways)
Big Data LDN certainly, in September. Plus Helsinki Data Week 2025 obviously!
French Manhattan cocktail in a Nick&Nora glass
Tonight's cocktail:
(Almost) French Manhattan
1.5 oz cognac (Hennessy VS)
1.5 oz sweet vermouth (Cocchi Torino)
0.25 oz Cointreau
1 dash each Angostura & orange bitters
Garnished with a Maraschino cherry
Listened to this during my lunchbreak - excellent stuff! I have had quite similar experiences in a few organizations about how the centralized data team that "does stuff" quickly becomes a bottleneck, but a data team that "enables stuff to be done" becomes an accelerator.
Also pinging #databs to get all the folks following that stream here
This goes on my must-listen-at-first-opportunity list right away. Team Topologies has been a huge influence on how I think about data organizations and operating models!
Welcome!
Data Whisperer would be great, but Scott Taylor took it already
Utterly ridiculous how bad the PowerPoint web app interface is. I can't connect arrows to objects? THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT aaaargh
Damn that's good
Basically the same thing! The beautiful thing about amaros is that you can pretty freely substitute them for each other and every time the result is good and interesting.
A glass of Amaro Caldo made with Cynar, a bottle of Cynar, and a lit candle
Just a little nightcap for tonight's cocktail. Amaro Caldo - simply pour some hot water on Amaro of your choice, garnish with a rough lemon twist or not, perhaps add a bit of honey or not. This time I went with Cynar, but Averna is my usual go-to. Simple, cozy, warm - maybe demure, as they say ๐
After a binge of about two years and some 800 episodes, I have finally caught up with the We Have Ways of Making You Talk podcast.
I'm not sure how I can deal with this minuscule weekly dosage of @almurray.bsky.social and James Holland from now on. It's like I've been put on C-rations!
Interesting! I don't have any Pamplemousse, any ideas what might work there?
That kind of talk gets you thagomized in no time

Do try it! It was a tad sour to my tastes perhaps, would probably cut down the lemon a bit, but otherwise great. My next Cynar experiment is probably going to be a Black Manhattan, or possibly some kind of Negroni variant. I really like the taste!

Electric bass
New toy! Got myself an early Christmas present, a Tokai Jazz bass, made in Japan! Can't wait to take her on a ride tomorrow ๐
The two people whose writings you will want to read regarding this are Andrew Jones (who coined the idea) and Chad Sanderson
