There is so much that sits on top, under and next to the app/appview code and server - design, user support, legal, security patches, maintenance , moderation, the list goes on.
A few people have asked, can’t you fork Bluesky/Blacksky. Yes there is a lot of code and components that can be reused and that’s great. What takes money and time is setting up, running and maintaining something that works well for 10s of thousands, maybe 100s of thousands of users.
“Anyone can fork” is technically true but economically misleading — you can’t fork an operating budget.
Code is free. Infra and labor are not.
