What’s interesting here is they say “culture” when they mean “people” but they think that this maintains a veneer of deniability about what they’re really saying. In any case it’s true that the “culture” of the tech billionaires is morally and intellectually depraved rot bsky.app/profile/elio...

Hey, Beshear, Lis Smith, & associated Majority Dem-types:

If you want to kill group-speak, how about we start with “officer-involved shooting,” “ice agent involved-shooting,” “weaponized vehicle” & other mealy-mouthed obfuscations of state-sanctioned murder?

There is so much that sits on top, under and next to the app/appview code and server - design, user support, legal, security patches, maintenance , moderation, the list goes on.

A few people have asked, can’t you fork Bluesky/Blacksky. Yes there is a lot of code and components that can be reused and that’s great. What takes money and time is setting up, running and maintaining something that works well for 10s of thousands, maybe 100s of thousands of users.

“Anyone can fork” is technically true but economically misleading — you can’t fork an operating budget.

Code is free. Infra and labor are not.

People who say “there is no algorithm here” are misinformed on 2 counts

- There are 50K+ of algorithms designed by developers and non-developers alike

- There is no singular “here”, there are many interconnected places

There was a time when the president inspired pride instead of exhaustion. I miss that more than I can say.

It's harder to measure but I feel like RFK Jnr shutting down funding for MRNA research is actually up there with DOGE cuts and this latest Iranian war as a contender for Most Evil Things Trump II has done. Accounted properly, this regime is really wracking up 20th-century-dictator kill counts imo.

Compare this to the 5 years the guy who stole from the IRS got, and Trump's efforts to turn that into a $10B payday.

I've had some friends suggest that there was plausible deniability for people who used to work at Palantir who thought at the time it was just another tech company. I always found that hard to believe as it was always creepy and cultish. But after this... anyone still working there...

Pancreatic cancer mRNA vaccine shows lasting results in an early trial Scientists caution that more research is needed, but nearly all of the patients who responded to the personalized vaccine are still alive six years later.

We have an apparent cure for most people with pancreatic cancer—a profoundly swift, deadly cancer—and the position of the U.S. government is that it should be banned. This is real fall-of-empire stuff.

I think a lot about what self-decentralizing would mean as a property.

Centralizing forces are constant. They materialize everywhere. So the act of decentralizing needs to be constant, built-in, and adaptive.

people are smart! back in the day, lots of non-technical folks figured out how to set up personal websites for all kinds of things, before blogging tools.

the barrier isn't technical knowledge, but undoing 20 years of how walled gardens have defined things like "accounts" and "contacts" etc.
