Don't let anyone talk you out of spending $15 on a new hobby. That $50 will be the best $400 you ever spent.

This is not wrong.

RFK surely. Listeria poisoning from raw milk. DJT has the best doctors money can buy, RFK doesn't believe in doctors.

Keir Starmer has the chance to do the funniest thing... (Hold a rejoin referendum on the same date as the general election which hands power to Farage)

Hydrocarbons got more expensive. UK uses hydrocarbons. UK gets poorer. Govt can affect the distribution of the impoverishment (and their choice can impact fuel consumption & future growth) but not make it go away. We have tax and benefits as tools for redistribution & we must keep the price signal.

I have very mixed feelings on this... It is what the New Testament says that believers are saved by faith and not by works.

OTOH any church which has endorsed Trump for political office at any point has much to answer for.

Oh no... I think I pronounce it as Dee-REE-shlay on the grounds it seemed French and I thought that the best French rendition.

I might be too old to change on this particular matter!

[Seymour Skinner out of touch meme]

Am I letting the best be the enemy of the good?
No. The good *is* the enemy of the best.

In other words: a fine memorial to Robert Mueller, a great public servant, is how much Trump loathes him.

So abandoned churches are fine to be turned into fancy houses for wealthy atheists or into Wetherspoons, but it would definitely be wrong if they were used by a religion for worshipping the same God for which they were originally built?

My personal preference is probably to power on the basis of a minimally important effect size but include an interim analysis (with error control) in case the effect size is more in line with prior expectations.

Wow awful to hear it argued that studies need to be kept small so that small effects don't get detected and concluded to be important just because p < 0.05.

I do believe studies can be overpowered for reasons of waste and Lindley's paradox...

It's so funny when often the feedback I get is that I talk too quickly when lecturing/presenting.

Just try 1.5x speed, see how you get on ๐Ÿ˜‰

Turn HARD books into EASY books with Magibook! Etc. Illustrated by enshittified sentence from The Great Gatsby.

If perchance, this artifice could arrest my talking as Miss Bennett after each brief immersion in the writing of Miss Austen, truly that would be an achievement most magical; yet, such powers are no doubt beyond all but the Lord Himself.

I don't think anyone without a vested interest in getting Starmer or Labour out of office has a grievance with how he has handled it in the first week. It would be a really bad idea to change course without the circumstances materially changing.

Keir Starmer put in a real bind.

On the one hand, he could join in with a war which is almost certainly illegal and ill-fated, kowtowing to Trump (one of the most unpopular people in the world, especially among people who might vote Labour next GE), and giving Farage and Badenoch a huge win...

Who actually were the Hero Voters? Labour won in 2024 because of economically insecure voters, not social conservatism.

Have been a bit frustrated by some of the conversation about Labour's voter coalition.

I've written about who the "Hero Voters" actually were, how we won them, and what we need to do to earn their support next time.

I actually re-watched the series and film (Serenity) in the last few months. Some things about it are still great to this day, and I got plenty nostalgic, but it also carries around a fair amount of misogynistic baggage (I wonder why) and it would be hard to imagine a reboot working...

Subtract 30, divide by 2 is a decent approximation to converting from degrees Farenheit to degrees Celsius across ambient temperatures.

Ah right, an impairment is when you thought your building was worth ยฃ8mn and it gets valued instead at ยฃ6mn. That isn't a problem unless you were planning to sell it, or you need to spend ยฃ2mn to get it to a usable condition!

So towards the top of RG for % spent on staff costs. Unsurprising they are targeting staff cuts, but it's a strategy that works much less than senior management like to imagine.

Thanks for the charts!

I have not, but my maths suggests the note has frequency of 58.3 Hz or some power of 2 multiple of that. It should look like it is vibrating extremely slowly?

If you bend by a quarter-tone you would almost identically sync with the camera frame rate!

I get that, but I actually think it's good to have a clear distinction between the operators for variable assignment, function parameter setting, and equality testing.

But if it's in your own code, you're not hurting anyone!

No, I think using '=' for assignment in #Rstats goes on the bottom row... ๐Ÿ˜‰
