The applicant with me got 96.4%. Threshold was 97% in maths (up from 91%). Pretty brutal and I would have hoped the EU/ERC would have increased funds to absorb the (presumably) many applicants from the US.

Agreed. A lot of more should be invested in our future

The application I was supervisor of this year was also rejected with >96%. Last year the cut off for mathematics was 91.6%. I suspect the (almost) doubling of applications led to an even more ridiculous cut-off level. But perhaps still enough to get a 'seal of excellence' and alternative funding?

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

The EU should bring out the `retaliatory sanctions package' again. The bully cannot be reasoned with or relied upon to keep to any laws or treaties. There cannot be any tolerance for threats of force. It is going to be painful, but we need a swift and determined `divorce'.

It is… I’ve already declined two conference invitations at lovely places that I’d really wish I’d been able to go to. Sadly, academic ‘boycotts’ only/mainly affects those who are already under a lot of pressure

Congratulations! I hope you are enjoying your achievement. Don’t let it be taken away from those who cannot appreciate the pursuit of knowledge

How We Beat The Fascists Last Time: The London History Show
How We Beat The Fascists Last Time: The London History Show YouTube video by J. Draper

"How to beat fascists", a timely video on lessons from 1970s Britain (www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeHv...) by J Draper:
– Focus on a single platform of anti-fascism uniting the political spectrum
– Don't waste time arguing with them: they aren't normal.
(Summary 41:43) Give it some visibility if you can

I quit facebook after the analytica scandal, and quit meta (read, WhatsApp) a year later. I was concerned about loosing connections but I messaged those I wanted to stay in touch with and am in contact with them every so often. It was a big decision for me, but as a consequence am much more content

π-rate's (b)log Inspired by several other (significantly more popular) blogs out there, I was tempted to write short summaries of my articles and generally ramble about mathematics here. This is still very much an ex...

After several years of procrastinating: I started a blog! (troscheit.eu/blog)
In the future there will be more paper summaries, other random mathsy thoughts, and more terrible puns. The next post will be on my experience teaching the International Mathematics Masters in Algeria. #MathSky #EduSky

Well, at least they’re upfront about it being a good choice for “home” and “fire”

The waiting time paradox is another example (this time from probability theory).

For the longest time I've wanted to write a blog about the maths I am interested in.

Instead, I procrastinate!

You are an inspiration (and seriously, use git!)

Today was my last day teaching at the NHSM in Algiers for the International Master in Mathematics (IMM) programme. It’s been a fantastic two weeks with superbly enthusiastic students! Soon I’ll write a blog of my time here, but for now I’ll enjoy my last weekend before heading back to Sweden.

We strongly suggest that academic publishers and other platforms that host research rapidly implement a Share to Bluesky button for their articles. Here's how:

Hello BlueSky! I left Twitter in 2021 with the rise in COVID mis-/disinformation (you *could* say I’m a trend setter) and hoping for a fresh and positive community!

I’ll be rambling about maths, travels, #ThingsAcademicsSay, and post the occasional picture.
