Change in annual average temperature for the 50-years 1975-2024 for the 13 NOAA/NCEI climate divisions. Change in excess of 6ºF on the North Slope to just over 2ºF in central and southern Southeast Alaska.
Updated 50-year change of annual temperature for the Alaska climate divisions, now for 1975-2024. Largest changes are in the North Slope and West Coast divisions and driven by, you guessed it, sea ice loss. Data from NOAA/NCEI. #akwx #Climate #ClimateChange @climatologist49.bsky.social

A cat-sized grey, red, and white fox with a derpy face.
Also, they seem to permanently have the look my dog has when she's trying to not fall asleep. Very cute.

Pretty amazing to see a Channel Island fox in the wild, just chillin by a bench. These guys were nearly extinct when I was a kid.

Water people! I'm working on a syllabus for my sophomore Environmental Problem Analysis seminar.
I think our first topic (of three) is going to be river modification! What are your favorite approachable reads on rivers, dams, and channelization?

A snowy mountain ridge blocks the sun on a partly cloudy day
It's the time of year when "south" feels very significant. Photo taken at noon yesterday.

A white beluga whale merging from a white freestanding bathtub in an elegant, richly colored interior. The background features dark green paneled walls with subtle palm-leaf designs. Above the dolphin, a modern light fixture with spherical, frosted globes hangs down, adding a touch of sophistication. A gold faucet with a minimalist design stands to the left of the tub, contrasting with the deep green and complementing the luxurious atmosphere.

NOAA Committee Conducting Survey on Methods to Deter Conflicts with Marine Mammals
Deadline for fishermen, dock and marina owners, and others to complete the survey extended to December 22.
To better understand how fishers and the seafood industry are responding to marine mammal interactions, there’s a voluntary, anonymous survey about use of and perceptions of deterrents. If you work in fishing communities in the US, please consider sharing! www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-stor...

Nov 2024 global data from ERA5 Reanalysis showed that it was the 2nd warmest Nov on record. More importantly, it is now a 100% certainty that 2024 will finish as the warmest year on record (1940-present), and likely the first year with an average temp over 15C in the history of human civilization.

Saw some cool examples of ice rafting while skating this weekend. As freeze progresses, rocks and sediments get stuck in the growing ice canopy, seemingly #DefyingGravity. That's some wicked sediment transport 😆
