Retrieval Practice Isn’t a Quiz Why many geography Do Nows test memory without building understanding

Most geography Do Nows test isolated facts.
5 questions. 5 ticks. Sometimes no geographical understanding diagnosed.
Geography knowledge comes in three flavours — substantive conceptual, procedural. Most retrieval only hits the first.
New post on how to fix that 👇

Curriculum isn't just content. It's a statement of values — what we believe matters enough to teach, and how we believe young people learn best

The best CPD doesn't add to teachers' plates — it sharpens what's already there. Small, repeating patterns of deliberate practice. That's where the real change happens.

Tonights #geogchat - How do you engage students in place knowledge when there is so much content to cover?

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

We also verbalise each lesson how this links to past learning and future learning, and within each SOW we link the knowledge and skills to different careers so they see its value.

I have planned our KS3 Geography curriculum to take students on a "journey around the world" and students have really grasped onto this thread that links all of our topics together. We also revisit some more difficult concepts through studying different places in KS3, so they can link their learning

Ultimately, curriculum coherence is about making geography meaningful. Pupils should sense the “why” behind each topic. When they can connect Year 7 map skills to Year 13 global challenges, that’s when real understanding lights up. #geogchat

At KS4, I emphasise making links back to KS3 case studies, encouraging pupils to compare and critique earlier work. Revisiting prior knowledge gives them a sense of progression and affirms that geography is cumulative, not compartmentalised. #geogchat
