Photo showing a microscopic view of a sediment. There are tiny grains of quartz that are translucent, volcanic material grains that are black and grey, and some white to yellowish microfossils. In the middle of the view is a slightly larger grain that is actually a foraminifera fossil. It has three roundish bulges.

I am preparing for my Saturday lab work on these Early Pleistocene sediments for the coral boarding school class this weekend, and I managed to find a nice foraminifera! I still have no idea how to pick them out, the tweezers I have are way too big and static is a problem.

AI is powerful. I use it every day.

But I have one rule:
I don’t use it for things I can’t explain.

Because sooner or later,
you’ll need to defend what you did.

And if you can’t ...
AI isn’t helping you anymore.

It’s exposing you.

Try to see if students under the supervisor, are healthy independent individuals, and not overworked vessels producing papers to platform brand of the supervisor. Also, call them out if you see them pestering, talking at, or over, young women.

For early career students. Ask former students, especially women, minorities and socioeconomically underprivileged, about the supervision before applying. If you get harassed, most universities will rather throw you under the bus, than your supervisor.

Did you notice the academic:

✨Taking credit and stage (especially in PR) for work done by early careers
✨Struggling to talk in detail about "own" research
✨Forcing themselves as co-author despite minor contributions
✨Bad-mouthing own students

The inset shows a MERMAID underwater seismograph just after launch, its antenna still sticking above the surface, against a background of the Baie de Aotupa⁩ in ⁨French Polynesia⁩. The MERMAIDs float passively with the ocean current, typically at a depth of 1500m, and come to the surface to transmit seismograms in quasi-real time after detecting an earthquake. Such robots provide an affordable solution to the dearth of seismometers in the oceanic domain, especially in the Southern hemisphere, which still hampers global seismic tomography (Credit: Frederik Simons, Princeton University).
