Thank you thank you āŗļø Hope you enjoy the record!
If you're into "Spiritual Jazz," but aren't collecting CHARLES MINGUS albums, you're doing it wrong. Hard to pick just one Mingus LP, but you can't go wrong with this all-time classic. My 1959, original deep groove #vinyl pressing. Basically, just buy everything by Mingus.

For @pitchfork.com , I wrote about the record that got me obsessed with jazz, and in particular the song āFables of Faubus,ā an unbeatable lampooning of American racism circa the dawn of the 1960s. Mingus forever pitchfork.com/reviews/trac...
Thank you for your kind words š„°
A timely and excellent review of a historic musical condemnation of fascism in the United States of America, including the naming of those who, from high places, colluded with Faubus. Here's a link for those who aren't able to pay to read the article:
I know '59 was a joke (tho I don't doubt that @onetrueposter.bsky.social would be more than happy), but here's a fantastic album & Pitchfork did a nice write-up about it today

Mingus, the peak of that era of jazz, to my mind. There are a lot of other greats too, but: Mingus.
Remember vile Orval Faubus targeted black students, the Little Rock Nine? Carlotta Wallsā house was bombed a month before her graduation. She believed "her chemistry teacher had helped other students build the explosive that targeted her.ā A must listen, and must read. from @dfelsenthal.bsky.social

Wait sorry Trump did create COVID so
One would hope that a city with a notably progressive mayor would stop this corrosive nonsense from taking root, rather than encourage it.
And Iāll add that I have never read anything like @dfelsenthal.bsky.social review/essay/sonorous exegesis of @waynekoestenbaum.bsky.social ās fat and hairy new book. Canāt wait to dive in.

Here is Daniel Felsenthal's brilliant and generous review of my new novel, "My Lover, the Rabbi." I can't imagine a more gratifying and gleaming analysis.
Thrilled to write about @waynekoestenbaum.bsky.social and his new novel, an immersion in gay sex, erotic yearning and religious self-knowledge unlike any I've ever read. Glad @nymag.com and @vulture.com let me wax rhapsodic on this one.

Canāt get over the daily shithead behavior of copsācase in point, this SUV parked diagonally in the middle of a crosswalk, a block from Union Square, in one of NYCās busiest neighborhoods. Weāre supposed to believe they want to repair their sense of trust with the public, right?
Giving a reading in Baltimore tonight! Come hang out

Iāll be at AWP in Baltimore next week, tabling with my friends in the Freelance Solidarity Project, moderating a panel about unionization Friday ā and also reading some poems or maybe a bit of prose with these excellent folks at the Station North Tool Library. Come through Sat 5-7
This guy gets it.
Underlying everything that's happening, even if the public isn't super aware of it, is that there aren't many journalists left. 75 percent fewer journalists now than 25 years ago, and newspapers, the bastion of American journalism, are in even worse shape. share.google/2KL2PkERkgnQ...
The Project 2025 architect who promised to put federal employees āin traumaā is spending $15 million of former USAID fundingāmoney that would have gone toward fighting HIV, polio, malaria, and other diseasesāto bankroll his security detail. trib.al/TSV3cmb
Also love the presumptions of this NYT tweetāwhat about tea bags that are not dusty and decaf that is fresh and not reheated?
A small plug today to consider joining the Freelance Solidarity Project. We're all in this media shitscape together, and it's going to take organizing to rescue its remains from the dumpster fire.
