Very beautiful area. We drove down through a picturesque river valley on Highway 15 to get there. It was a lovely trip.
Historic stone Maiden Creek Friends Meetinghouse in Leesport, PA
Sacred Harp song being lead from the hollow square inside the Maiden Creek Friends Meetinghouse, with a cast iron stove in the middle of the wooden floor.
The class of singers inside the Maiden Creek Friends Meetinghouse.
Outside Maiden Creek Friends Meetinghouse before the all-day singing. Trees overhead with sunlight coming through. This is where the dinner on the grounds will take place later.
The Maiden Creek singing is wonderful. It’s held on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We went for the first time last year.
Haunting song that I’d always felt bad for the altos who didn’t have a part—Christian Harmony does have an alto. Surprised that the 2025 SH edition didn’t add an alto part, but maybe one doesn’t mess with perfection.
Scan of Page 15 of the 1860 hymnbook REPUBLICAN SONGSTER. THE PEOPLE'S NOMINEE. BY KARL KRITON. “Air - Nelly Bly." Republicans ! with peerless might, Proudly lead the van ! Strike for freedom ! strilce for right ! " Old Abe's" an honest man. He, a noble President, The ship of state shall guide ; While o'er a nation's senators, Hamlin shall preside. Hi ! Lincoln ! ho ! Lincoln ! An honest man for me ; I'll sing for you — I'll shout for you— The People's nominee. Once we had a compromise, A check to Slavery's wrong ; Douglas crushed the golden prize. To help himself along. Then the North, and then the West, Arose with giant power ; Pierce succumbed to the South' s behest. But Douglas had to cower. Hi ! Douglas ! sly Douglas ! A senator would be ; So he tried the " Squatter dodge," And went for Kansas free. Democrats, (or *' office rats,") Met to nominate ; "Fire-eaters" came, all aflame, To sever State from State ;
Page 16 with the rest of the lyrics: Their slave-code, {and Covode,) Caused the ** Softs" to quake ; The "little Giant," now defiant, No slave-code would take. Oh ! alas ! beef is scarce ! To the North they go : See once more, at Baltimore, Our united foe ! But the People met en masse, In the boundless "West ; Of Freedom's sons a noble class ! Some loved Seward best ; Chase, McLean, and Bates, I ween, Are worthy such a call ; *' Old honest Abe's" the People's choice, And we'll roll on the ball. Hi ! Lincoln ! ho ! Lincoln ! President shall be ; One and all, roll on the ball, For the People's nominee. No missile sent, with ill intent, Across the Ohio River ; The South's dark crime, in God's own time. She'll wipe away forever. Yet here we stand, proud Freedom's band, No compromise with "wrong ; For truth and right we'll bravely fight. Be this our battle-song — Hi ! Lincoln ! brave Lincoln ! President shall be ; We'll one and all vote this Fall For the People's nominee.
Oh my! What a slice of history. This is an amazing book.
Political arguments should always be sung.

Breaking news from the NYT...puts the break in breaking.
A couple somewhat irreverent variations:
> single verses or phrases, but from multiple bot accounts named for the poet: Watts, Cowper, Newton, Steele, etc. Have them reply to each other. Like a rap battle.
> do the bible verses under the title instead, but have them end like the fortune cookie game.
Hillary is the OG cause for DT.
I’m interested in their doc: kyivindependent.com/war-crimes/t... for more perspective.
Mr. Nobody: The only reason the film’s footage left Russia is the schoolteacher was a “small people” who did something different. The now expanded world audience can decide whether to resist or be complicit.
We saw Mr. Nobody during the @hotdocs.bsky.social festival last year in April. If you ever get to Toronto, the Hot Docs theatre is a gem of a documentary film house and worth seeing a film at.
I see that the Kino film collection has it watch.kinofilmcollection.com/mr-nobody-ag... (they even have a free trial)
And also rentable on AppleTV and Amazon Prime.
Excellent documentary and story of a teacher who gave one of the best graduation speeches ever.

What hardware does this run on? Or is it cloud hosted? Besides the Claude subscription, what other costs would be needed?
Great article! (once I figured out I needed to click the email me a link to keep reading button…)
There’s probably a Venn diagram that explains it. Just use a variety of shapes to draw it ◢ ● ▇ ◆.
What clinched it for me was finding William Cleary on Facebook. His post about the debut used the same photo as the Medium article.
For those (like me) who wondered what song was his, I’m pretty sure it’s 562 – Mournful Joy (William Cleary).
Dilemma: Amazon Canada has EarFun Air Pro 4i & 4 at almost the same price. Which has the best overall audiophile sound? Coin flip? (Replacing an Air S pair)
Congrats on the 500th review. The first pair I bought based scarbir.com were Fiil T1 Lites; still some of the best-sounding audio I've heard.
Such a groovy cover
He looks deplorable and acts deplorable. He is definitely fits in the ‘basket of deplorables’ Hillary warned the nation about years ago.
As long as the skeleton appears to be beating time within the Frame of Modesty, it isn’t gauche.
It’s a really good song and wonderful now that more folks can lead and sing it. It was also one of the first ‘new’ songs I’ve lead. And so far it’s been called seven times at the 2025 book singings we’ve been to!
And also Northern Harmony (Village Harmony) did Millbrook too. northernharmony.bandcamp.com/track/millbr...
Millbrook is a banger!
Gotta give a shoutout to Shenandoah Harmony for having it first.
And looks like Northampton Harmony did it before that:

How does a Trump voter watch what is going on and still support his policy on this?
Everyone has the phone number of their representative and can make their opinion known.
Link to the big debut singing audio with new and old songs added to the 2025 edition of The Sacred Harp (the best collection of shape-note hymns, revival choruses, plain and fuging tunes, odes, and anthems ever offered the singing public)

And… the new songs from the debut singing are on YouTube now, too. So we get to enjoy them even more. youtube.com/playlist?lis...
You can tell we’re singing a new song because our heads are down sight reading the music for the first time on one of the songs added to the new 2025 edition of the Sacred Harp. It was an amazing day to experience those new songs with all those voices that day.
