historically - tremendous professional knowledge and aptitude in 'operational' matters, but that has very limited carry over to being able to see war in broader terms

My personal experience was that whilst the military students I taught were immensely impressive in a huge number of ways, & had often experienced conflict in ways I (thankfully) never would, the breadth of their knowledge of war was surprisingly limited. Also reflected in the figures I study
