Jesse Jackson visiting the Krome Detention Center in 1981. He exposed the racist policy of mandatory detention of Haitians who were deemed "economic" refugees not worthy of asylum. Image from @tinashull.bsky.social's book Detention Empire.
A great interview with a dear friend, @annalekasmiller.bsky.social. Check out this great podcast interview with Anna, discussing journalism, social media, media literacy, misinformation, and its impacts on migration policy, namely the ICE and CBP occupation of Minneapolis. Such a brilliant episode!
“But what deeply troubles me now is that for all the steps we've taken toward integration, I've come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house."
Dr. King said this famous quote on March 27th, 1968, mere days before his murder. But the context around the quote is interesting...
Bari Weiss's censoring 60 Minutes in the name of "building trust" is of a coin with Peter Hans's imposing a pro-doxxing syllabus policy in the name of "rebuilding public trust." They are both the gaslighting actions of political operatives sent to destroy the institutions they lead.
AAUP NC President Belle Boggs has written this powerful essay in response to both the Brown shooting and developments in the UNC system, with an urgent call to action for all of us in NC. Excerpts and action link in thread: 1/ @aaup.org

Hans acknowledged that "outright harassment" will be a consequence, and mumbled something about protecting faculty who are just "doing their jobs" - which he is also in the process of redefining.

WE WON: "This case -– perhaps the most important ever to fall w/in..this district court squarely presents the issue whether non-citizens lawfully present here in US..have the same free speech rights as the rest of us. The Court answers this Constitutional question unequivocally “yes, they do.”"

🗣️ New from MiSC scholar Jenna Loyd for @publicbooks.bsky.social.
The article challenges the idea that "the border" is just a line on a map. Instead, it's a technology—a tool that mixes law, territory, bureaucracy & policing to control human mobility.

It was an honor to give a keynote speech welcoming new US citizens at a naturalization ceremony on the 4th of July in #Charlotte last week. My message? Immigrants (not the Dec of Independence or “nation” or the Statue of Liberty or so-called golden door) are a beacon and what make America great

this is the level of funding where all the possibilities for American politics that have been described as hyperbolic over the past decades - the comparisons to Nazi Germany and other nightmares of the 20th century - become logistically possible and politically likely

🚨WOW. It turns out that a "Tren de Aragua gathering" the Trump admin said it broke up in March ... was just a BIRTHDAY PARTY.
None of the people arrested at the party seem to have any criminal record — and none have been charged criminally in the months since it happened.

ICE turned back in Somerville
So many Somerville community members came out that ICE simply retreated. Nonviolent resistance works when communities come together to protect kids and families.
In San Antonio today, plainclothes ICE officers (not masked this time) arrested, handcuffed, and zip-tied a family of five (yes, ALL of them, including the little children) coming out of their immigration court hearing — which ICE had just had dismissed.

Happy International Workers' Day, especially to migrant workers.
Hours ago, @politico.com revealed that DOGE is working with DHS on automating mass deportation efforts — likely explaining why many US citizens, green card holders, and even a Canadian (in Canada) got threatening emails last night terminating “your parole” and telling them to leave the US in 7 days.
