I don't center electoral politics in my work, but the NYC mayoral race and Mamdani's campaign commitment to collaborative action captivated me. So I wrote about it.

"If a socialist can wrest power from the servants of oligarchy in the financial capital of the world—well, my friends around this country, around this world, what can you do to take the power back from them where you live?”(by @attackerman.bsky.social) #IloveNYC

And the person who turned up to support him with no notice is the Muslim dude who have cross endorsed each other and who the msm has been going into overtime to cast him as antisemitic

📣 New guide for those thinking about using GenAI in research on violence against women.
We partnered with @thesvri.bsky.social to lay out big picture, structural, and ethics questions that researchers should ask before using GenAI for violence against women research.

We're running 2 events on online gender-based violence this month in NYC. Join us if you are around, or coming to the CSW! This one is from 4-6pm on March 17. mailchi.mp/technologysa...
Do you have any numbers on how it will affect Indiana businesses? Esp small businesses? That might be useful. His biggest issue with govt is all the "needless bureaucracy" that small biz has to go through to operate -- the fees, paperwork, compliance, the hoops/circles. (He's not entirely wrong)
I'm not sure what services he depends on, but good idea. He def uses highways! IDK about medicaid. I think it's going to take things really crumbling for people to see what's happening. There's lots of "they must be lazy if they need govt services" without understanding where federal $ actually goes
A hometown friend works with the local VA hospital, helping older and disabled vets adapt to living at home as their health declines. She got the 5-things email. She says it's a total waste of time, and everyone is pissed about it. Maybe the heartland will wake up soon, as this is coming for them.
At the same time he's calling me every 2 days to ask how I'm doing, what's happening with my own income, and saying he wishes he could do something to help. But he means help *me* find a new job/a new field of work, not help stop the whole dismantling of the government from happening.
He was shocked by the morning paper saying that his state gets 42% of its funding from the federal government. But I can't even tell how he is processing that info. Is he thinking "well, that's 42% 'waste' to cut," or is he thinking "hm, federal funding must be important to our state's well being."
How do you even have conversations with people you love about this stuff when the foundations on which to build dialogue are parallel universes and our media and information sources project alternate realities and values?
My dad: "If the 5-things-you-did-this-week email finds even 5,000 ghost employees, it'll have been worth it."
[I love my dad, but JFC]
Me: "What are you even talking about?'
Dad: "Do you have a better idea for identifying ghost employees?"
Me: "...So, is the cold front hitting you out there?"
18F was doing exactly the type of work that DOGE claims to want – yet we were eliminated shortly after midnight. Read our letter to the American people:

Earlier this month our NLP-CoP hosted @madianou.bsky.social (Professor and Co-Director of the Migrant Futures Institute at Goldsmiths, University of London) to discuss her new book “Technocolonialism: When Technology for Good is Harmful.”
Here are some of the key takeaways from the event (1/5)🧵
Yea, Trusk is burning everything down and approvals are super low. Power loves a vacuum. Who is going to step in? Would be nice if there were an intentional choice. Opposition is def fractured now, but it has been for aaaages. Hope Dems wake up soon or - even better - an alternative emerges.
Super interesting stats on current approval rates of different political figures (assuming we trust the numbers) Where are the charismatic leaders who can leverage the weaknesses all around us and create representatives we could actually get behind?

Newsletter: Generative AI is a marketing con perpetuated by Sam Altman and Dario Amodei through a mixture of lies and half-truths carried by a tech media that fails to ask the right questions. Outside of ChatGPT, generative AI companies barely get any traffic at all.

"Anatomy of an AI Coup" from Tech Policy Press
1) This is a very good read on the situation in the US.
2) Is there a way to block this photo? I honestly never want to see it again.

Feb 11, @madianou.bsky.social will talk with the NLP-CoP about her book Technocolonialism. This will be a good space for a convo about tech, humanitarianism, and colonialism. We planned it last year + it's so relevant now. Personally, I'd love some nuance on the topic. merltech.org/humanitarian...
seeing takes about the aid institutions and their role in imperialism. correct. If someone said "investor-owned hospitals exploit the vulnerable to benefit shareholders" I'd nod. If their followup was "and that's why I'm turning off your mom's dialysis machine" I'd...have some followup questions
Dios mio.
TFW you get a Teams alert that the weekly meeting you've been part of for the past 4 years is starting... but you got a stop work order on Sunday so you're no longer allowed to join :(
Is part of the point of the freeze to trigger the lawsuits that will end up with SCOTUS who can then deliver a verdict in favor of 47 and co?
I read this book about 6 months ago. It is brilliantly written. Suggest reading it to understanding what is happening right now and where things will likely go. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/741192...
FYI the National Council of Nonprofits is collecting stories via this form about how the executive orders are harming nonprofit organizations nationwide. If you just got screwed today, tell them about it here. They're also asking who is comfortable sharing their stories with reporters.
