@jonathanmaberry.bsky.social and/or @realrayporter.bsky.social don't suppose you know if/when the earlier Joe Ledger books will be available on Audible in the UK? I am ploughing through the series at a rate of knots, and I really want to be able to listen to the whole set!

Okay. An important moment for us, if you’ll indulge me with a repost. It’s time to start the very first whisper of noise about our next game.

It’s a mailing list! But it’s a mailing list that I’m hoping will be a bit different than what you’re used to.

PSA: giving attention or money to Harry Potter will line the pockets and further the influence of a woman, who's going to use that to spread hateful and harmful lies about trans people. She will interpret continued engagement with her products as direct support of her views. So please just don't.

Hey has anyone checked if @foldablehuman.bsky.social is planning a video on Generative AI?

Wow, telling your friends and family that you've been referred for an adult autism assessment sure is a great way to find out that most of your friends and family have thought you were autistic your whole life and never mentioned it

But I love you even if, or even because you're mad!

I guess I understand people not talking about it, because for most of the population, AI is still just something that they typed at for a couple of weeks then forgot about because there are far more pressing issues in the world

When when when?! Go on, just paste it in the replies here, no-one uses Bluesky I'm sure it'd be fine

If you've read all this, you're clearly mad, and I love you. Go tell the people in your life that are good to you how much you love and appreciate them, before the AI overlords put us all in a zoo for their enjoyment

Or, I'm totally wrong, and didn't need to write several hundred words that, generously, 3 people will read, because I got triggered by a scaremongering essay.

Posting anyway though because I feel a lot lighter for venting it all, and I'd love for people who know more to tell me why I'm wrong

Or maybe I'm giving too much credit to these people assuming they've figured out where this will go at all, and they genuinely believe they're going to achieve it and genuinely haven't considered what's next. Progress for progress' sake. That's a pretty human thing to do.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

OR, they're just hoping they'll be the ones that win the race, and take over the world with their robot army and become the god kings of humanity living in a giant castle with their buddies while the rest of us fight for scraps at the gates?

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

Or, the creators of these AIs actually want the Star Trek socialist utopia, but they can't talk about it publicly because then all their investors would pull the investment that is making the utopia possible.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

The cynic in me says that conversation isn't happening because they have too much stake in the AI future not happening. At least you that extent. All their wealth and power that they've stepped on others for would become meaningless.

Would the billionaires allow that?

So much discourse appears talking about whether AI will take a bunch of jobs.

But I don't get why there isn't more discussion about the fact that if it's all true, which is the promise all of this is built on, it's the end of the profit driven system they're building these models to "win" at.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

There's a scenario here where, IF IT WAS ALL TRUE, all of a sudden we move into a post-capitalist utopia where humans have everything they need to survive provided by the robots around them and they just... Live.

That would be beautiful. Although also a bit existentially terrifying.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

But if that is true, and they continue to have absolutely no regulation on AI, which they all seem to be pushing for, then how is that scenario not the end of capitalism?

2 months ago 1 0 1 0

They keep saying to wait a little longer and AI is going to change the world. And they need to keep saying that because they need investors to believe that's true, so that they will keep pouring money into their companies

I'm being very hyperbolic, but my point is that there are people in AI loudly and confidently stating that AI will replace 90% of white collar jobs in the next 1-5 years.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

So... What then?

The only people who have income are the people who own the companies that run the robots. So there's no-one to buy the things the robots make.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

Again, under capitalism, shareholders DEMAND that you use the forever robot slave that never goes on strike and always does a perfect job, because that means more money.

2 months ago 1 0 1 0

THEN, or even concurrently, imagine the AIs have helped folks figure out renewable energy, and robotics.

New batteries, new materials. Now, again, all the MANUAL jobs can be replaced with a robot with an AI in it.

They can work 24/7, no holidays, no sick days, no wages to pay.

2 months ago 1 0 1 0

But those manual jobs exist to provide goods and services that must be bought.

With money.

But... Loads of people don't have money.

Because... AI took most of the jobs.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

In the Western world, that's, conservatively, 50% of all jobs. 50% of the workforce suddenly have no income.

And no new jobs to move into, because AI is doing them.

So all of those people start fighting for whatever unskilled, manual jobs are available.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

Assuming all of their wild promises come true, in a few years AI will be capable of doing everything humans can do, but better.

If an AI is guaranteed to do everything faster and better than any human, then a capitalist system demands that AI do those jobs.

So, suddenly, AI takes all admin jobs

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

Hey, so, is anyone building these AI models and confidently stating they'll replace vast swathes of jobs across the globe actually thinking and/or talking about how the fuck humanity proceeds from there?

Fuck it I'm threading this, because I've been triggered

Have you been hit by the Warhammer mallet? I feel like it's steadily making its way into wider culture, but because I've taken a mighty biff to the head from said mallet, my algorithm is now heavily skewed

If a screenwriter put this in a movie or TV show, everyone would say that the symbolism was outrageously on the nose. Cannot believe this is real life

6 months ago 3 0 0 0

I just spent like 3 minutes writing out then deleting pithy jokey replies to this. But it's just so fucking dumb and shit that I can't find any humour in it. Even bleak British humour
