7/ There is an element of prejudice in a lot of this, both relating the grade itself, but also its demographics.
The majority of SAS and locally-employes doctors are international medical graduates, doctors from ethnic minority backgrounds, and / or women.
We are a marginalised cohort.
6/ Like other doctors, our pay has not kept pace with inflation, hence the ballot.
We are also frequently overlooked and undermined in the workplace. Respect, support for professional development, progression, even the right contract for the work done, are each often seen as optional.
5/ Issues affecting SAS doctors are many, and our issues in the workplace are not just around pay.
Recognition of our seniority and autonomy is hard to come by. The better paid Specialist contract is underused, even where doctors are objectively working as Specialists.
