Is there a priority to the list? Anything in the wishlist more pressing or necessary?

“We have a population that has learned — correctly — that pharmaceutical companies have lied, that institutions have failed them…But the response has not been better skepticism. It has been the migration of trust from one set of financially motivated actors to another.” Great point here

When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

A single panel comic from The New Yorker by cartoonist Tom Toro. A man in a town up suit sits around a fire telling a story to three younger characters, also in tattered clothing. The background is a dim post apocalyptic cityscape.

The caption reads “Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders.”

A vertically oriented computer screen shows scientific software split into four screens, each showing different components of the signal across a multi-electrode array recording from a piece of retinal tissue. 512 electrodes collecting from ~1000 cells simultaneously.

Running the MEA and collecting data from a very happy little piece of retina. With any luck we may even learn something!

Yup, I wanted to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt when I built my PC so I installed Windows 11… In retrospect maybe not the best choice but they’re doing their best to make sure Windows 10 is not going to be a viable option for long

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.

If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.

If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

But it seems to me that this has gone into overdrive since they became a cloud services company first, an AI company second, and a SaaS company third. Xbox is somewhere in there too, but dead last is “oh yeah, we make a desktop OS that many millions of people rely on… wonder how that’s doing…” 4/4

Maybe nothing has changed and Microsoft has always struggled to understand their non-enterprise customers. There are plenty of examples (Vista, Windows 8, Windows Phone… Zune) that show this disconnect…. 3/

That’s genuinely sad. Without competition there’s little incentive to do right by consumers. I really enjoy Linux, but it’s still not workable for certain use cases and technical barrier-to-entry is high. Apple is good but MacOS Tahoe is a garbage fire. And Chromebooks are something else entirely 2/

You know what’s wild? I haven’t used the Windows side of my dual boot PC in like… 6 months. Between ads, user-antagonistic design, AI everything, and Windows updates seemingly breaking major systems ~50% (charitably) of the time, it take a “no other options” situation to get me into Windows now… 1/

I’m one, maybe two unprompted “by the way… I have some new capabilities if you enable Gemini” ads away taking a sledgehammer to every Google home product in my house… I don’t want your garbage autocorrect controlling my lights, leave me TF alone.

Princess Bride and puppy snores, not a bad way to close out the year : ) Happy New Year everybody 🎆🍾

An array of 9 purple discs on a blue background. Figure from Hinnerk Schulz-Hildebrandt.

An array of 9 purple discs on a blue background. Figure from Hinnerk Schulz-Hildebrandt.

A nice shift in perceived colour between central and peripheral vision. The fixated disc looks purple while the others look blue.

The effect presumably comes from the absence of S-cones in the fovea.

It's an unbalanced centrifuge rotor in a candy bar. Some sick freak is out there putting all the weight on one side of the rotor. Just horrifying these people are allowed to walk among us.

Please be sure to check your kid's candy VERY carefully.

I just found an unbalanced centrifuge in a Snickers bar.

And what about Sam’s song about the guy who kicked the troll because the troll dug up his relative’s shinbone to chew on!? In a wry twist the guy either breaks his foot or has it eaten by the troll (conclusion unclear). Absolute banger! It’s like Peter Jackson didn’t even read the books…

a man in a suit and tie is sitting in front of a window with the words what a waste above him . ALT: a man in a suit and tie is sitting in front of a window with the words what a waste above him .

Reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time in ~20yrs and I forgot how much of Fellowship is just songs. Feeling so cheated that the movie left out the song about the cat, the dog, and the cow that got super drunk one night, broke a fiddle, and scared the cow so bad it jumped over the moon…

That’s an EPS-12V 8-pin power connector (usually goes to the motherboard). The GPU wants more power than a single PCIe 8 pin will deliver on its own and it may have come with a splitter that takes the EPS connection and converts it to 2 PCIe 8-pin connections. support.exxactcorp.com/hc/en-us/art...

Windows is getting a better em dash keyboard shortcut. Rejoice, Windows and em dash fans! Microsoft is finally adding an improved Windows-wide keyboard shortcut for em dash and en dash. The change is part of the latest Windows 11 Dev channel builds, so it...

FINALLY!

Although knowing Microsoft this’ll also automatically invoke CoPilot for some godforsaken reason, just to juice the numbers… www.theverge.com/news/767551/...

The local Safeway just started locking up their ice cream and I wanna take whatever moron executive thought this was a good idea and toss them casually into a wood chipper… this might seem extreme but I feel it’s justified. NEVER get between a stressed out grad student and their Ben & Jerry’s
