Recently, a joke in the recent II episode has come under fire for being potentially triggering and insulting to those with eating disorders. In the midst of this backlash, I was dragged into it with DMs directed toward me personally attacking me for being involved with the show and supposedly having something to do with the joke. I have been dragged for writing decisions in II before. It’s never fun. I don’t write the series and it becomes a source of endless frustration that people want to blame me for what they perceive as a change in direction for the series. It’s happened a lot throughout my 3+ years of being on it, so I naturally just dismissed it as “angry Twitter fans be angry” and said my piece about it. However, folks tried to explain to me what the issue was and rather than opening up and listening, I chose to be hostile and ignore it. While yes, this does come from a general frustration with previously mentioned instances of fans just being angry for the sake of it, I had ignored folks who were GENUINELY affected negatively by the joke, some of which suffer from EDs as well. This was an absolute garbage move on my part and I want to apologize. I am deeply sorry. I have no excuses for what was said. If anyone was hurt by my ignorance on the topic and my refusal to hear anyone out, I can’t apologize enough. While I don’t necessarily agree with folks’ interpretation of the joke, I could’ve and should’ve treated said folks with respect and not dismissal. As a trans person who’s always fought for everyone’s voice to be heard, this was contradictory to my morals and I acknowledge I need to do better. To those who explained the issue, even while I was being a total ass, I thank you for your time. To those disappointed in me, all I can say is I will try to do better.
A sincere apology and a promise to do better <3
