Protests (especially when held on a weekend) are a low-investment way for people to dip their toes into civic engagement outside of the voting booth. They also tend to be fun and positive, which is what you want for newbies

Black graphic with text "KNOW YOUR PROTEST RIGHTS You donโt need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you donโt need a permit to march in the streets or along sidewalks, as long as youโre not obstructing traffic or access to buildings. When you are lawfully present in any public space, you have the right to photograph anything in plain view, including federal buildings and the police. If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries. If you get stopped by the police, ask if youโre free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away. If you get arrested, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Donโt sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present. If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement office at a protest, you have the right to remain silent or to tell them that youโll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney โ no matter your citizenship or immigration status."
If you're taking to the streets for No Kings protests today, know your rights.

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. Itโs dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

In song and in solidarity, we stand with immigrants and with all who work toward a more just, welcoming, and humane world. ๐ผ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
Music has always been a force for resistance, healing, and collective action. We add our voices to the call for policies rooted in justice rather than punishment, and for an immigration system that upholds human rights and keeps families together. ๐งต
We recognize the deep fear, trauma, & separation that aggressive immigration enforcement has inflicted on individuals & families, particularly in communities of color. We honor the courage of those who raise their voices in protest, demanding accountability, compassion, & humane treatment for all. ๐งต
As a community chorus rooted in social justice and the power of our voices, we believe that dignity, safety, and belonging are fundamental human rights. Immigrants are integral to the cultural, economic, and artistic life of our communities. Many are our families, our neighbors, and our friends. ๐งต
The New Mexico Womenโs Chorus stands in unwavering support of immigrant rights and affirms our solidarity with those who are peacefully protesting the harm caused by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies and practices. ๐งต
โIโm becoming radicalized,โ [Rev James] Galasinski said, his voice rising. โIโm seeing our nation become more & more fascist before my eyes โ I saw it. I saw it. I mean, demanding papers? I never thought I would live in a country like this.โ

Art and writing is a form of protest. It is a form of empowerment. It is part of being human.
That is why you write when the world is on fire.
But the bigger reason that you should write and make art, is that your work is someone else's respite.
You don't know who they are. They may be someone in the future. But if you have escaped into a book, or a painting, or a TV show... Someone created that.
You can do that for someone else.
This is why we sing.
I LOVE SINGING WITH THESE PEOPLE COME SEE US โค๏ธโ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ผ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
