Discussing density-dependent vs independent pop regulation in class and student asked if human wars are DD or DI. I said maybe DD because wars are often over resources...except for the Iran war, which seems not about resources at all, but just a madman.
But thinking more, maybe that is the norm?

It shocks me how many businesses still don’t seem to get that Trump’s cultural revolution did not actually happen

I mean, if our grad students were getting that NIL money, they can release all the press releases they want
So anyway, amidst everything else, I've been spending this week figuring out how to deal with the death of a mentee

Wildlife trade drives animal-to-human pathogen transmission over 40 years
New in @science.org ‼️ In the most comprehensive study to date, we show that wildlife trade is driving animal-to-human zoonotic spillover at a planetary scale, with +1 spillover per host every 10 years. Live animal markets and illegal trade pose even greater risks. 🔓 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
If you wonder why students protested loudly under Biden but aren’t as visible under Trump, it’s because they thought they had some margin of safety to speak on campus then. Even before Trump 2.0, they learned administrators and political leaders were willing to harm them instead. So here we are.
Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez:
“The Government of Spain will not applaud those who set the world on fire just because they show up with a bucket.”

LA is installing new speed trap cameras on local streets, and fine whatever. If you're going 10-15 mph over the speed limit, it's a warning and then a $50 fine.
But if you are going ONE HUNDRED MPH over the speed limit, it's a $500 fine. Not like, revocation of your license??
Sorry Duke maybe you shoulda kept your herbarium 💁♀️😡
a blonde dude with lots of tattoos and jeffrey dahmer glasses looks moodily at the camera with a Very Cool t-shirt with a goth girl on it, surrounded by flowers. Underneath it says Plant Native Plants
A person with glasses in a lovely backyard and long brown hair wears a black t-shirt that says biology is bigger than binaries with a honeybee, lily, and clownfish on it
We have 2 cool shirts! I have to sell them out by early April for 2 reasons:
1) 5 of my family members are staying in the Skype a Scientist stockroom in mid-April 😅
2) I need to fund our mural project which starts the first week of April!
They're soft! They're cute! Get a shirt!

Just quietly slipped into this story:

We are a Hispanic-serving institution and we just elected our first Latina faculty president...maybe ever? But certainly in several decades
I need a tool where I can put in two addresses, and then it pinpoints a spot in between those two places where a person starting from each address will need to take no more than one transit line to get to the meeting spot. Does that make sense? A meet in the middle calculator for transit users?
There are at least three major news stories about sexual assault and abuse of power by men in prominent positions this week. Government, labor, academia; the culture is everywhere, and women disproportionally bear the weight of the consequences.
If this week feels extra heavy, be kind to yourself.
It was 95 degrees in Los Angeles today. It’s winter.
I'm not sure anybody even knows exactly how many people are being killed in the Middle East, but the ONLY consequence of war I hear on American media is about oil prices
