The big issue is that it's not just one person or one rare illness
If government funds one treatment like this, don't they have an ethical responsibility to fund all people who could benefit?
I'm not saying it's not worth it (I believe it is), but that's what policymakers have to consider

"Rare disease, in aggregate, is one of the largest unmet medical needs on earth."

"What if we started thinking of mRNA-CRISPR gene editing the same way — as molecular surgery, not as a pharmaceutical product?"

For those interested in gene therapy, a great read:

I thought it was just me! 🤣

In fairness, though, I also do that with squirrels in residential areas

High-tech health care only for the ultra-rich? B.C. toddler’s case spotlights inequality of gene therapy When Gurmoh Gill is playing with his favourite dump truck in his favourite park, there’s no sign the Surrey, B.C., toddler is experiencing mobility loss due to a rare neurodegenerative disease that could be cured — at a steep price.

Gene therapy is such an incredible innovation

But it’s out of reach for many people who could benefit due to the astronomical cost to treat relatively few patients

Little Gurmoh is far too young to understand why it’s hard to walk or that he is one of those patients

In BC, millions of taxpayer dollars are being poured into "innovative" programs with no transparency and little accountability

How is that ok?

What are the metrics for success?

Hanes: Quebec clinics complain new mandatory AI tool is not saving them time The filter for booking medical appointments is being rolled out to clinics as doctors raise concern it's a time suck, not a time saver.

Any time someone claims AI tools will make things better, it's important to respond with skepticism

Here's another example why:
