I see — I thought it was from your collection. About 15 years ago, I was really into Coldplay, but I have found far better music since then. Blues, jazz, classic country, classic rock, and rock and roll is mainly what I listen to these days. With some punk rock and post-punk thrown in there.

High-quality version of "Cross Road Blues"!
Did you actually play it or carefully slide it back into the box after taking the photo? ;)
I'm not going to turn down a string quartet version of the title song off A Rush of Blood to the Head. It was always my favorite song of theirs. I don't listen to them much anymore, though.
Let's play some blues for Lou:
Grant Green – "Blues For Lou" (recorded in 1963; released in 1999.)
A relaxing, slow, introspective tune. Quite wonderful.
Still my favorite jazz guitarist—with Wes Montgomery a close second.

The unique sound of Albert Collins and his capoed Telecaster… stinging, biting, sharp as a razor. Awesome!
Albert Collins – “Frosty” (recorded in 1964)

Let's spend the day listening to plenty of Merle Haggard—gone these ten years today.
“The Way I Am” (1980)
Without doubt one of his finest songs.

O, it is excellent
To have a giant’s strength; but it is tyrannous
To use it like a giant.
Indeed. I also just have a soft spot for Southern European cured meats in general—ham, sausage, etc. In Northern Europe, where I am from, they smoke the meat
(which is good in its own right), but nothing beats the Southern European style.
That looks tasty! I was in Barcelona close to a decade ago now, where we had tapas in this little place called El Xampanyet. It included thin slices of Jamón Ibérico; nicely seared beef, cooked to perfection; roasted Padrón peppers; and some type of Bruschetta. Still one of my fondest food memories.
A big thing of homemade Crawfish Étouffée for dinner—of course served with white rice and Louisiana’s Pure Crystal Hot Sauce.
Delicious.

Elmore James' superb cover of Robert Johnson's 1936 record "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom".
Good stuff.

Martini with absinthe from the other night:
2 1/4 oz. dry gin
3/4 oz. dry vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters (“Feegan’s” used)
3 good dashes (about half a tsp.) of absinthe (La Fée used)
Stir with ice, strain, and garnish with a lemon peel.
Truly an ambrosial drink. And yet so simple.

Improved Holland Gin Cocktail anno 1862:
2 oz. genever
1 tsp. gum syrup
1 tsp. maraschino
2 dashes Angostura
1 dash absinthe
Lemon peel
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Express a lemon peel and slip it in. Then smile and enjoy.
Damn tasty and unapologetically old-school.

If you've ever wanted to hear Emily Dickinson's famous poem "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain" turned into a fantastic song, here you go:
(The music video was shot at Emily Dickinson's homestead in Amherst, Massachusetts.)

Interesting to see earliest known recipe for the Creole Cocktail. I will try these ratios next time. How much do you think 2 dashes is in this case? A tsp.?
It was likely invented in NY, then?
Creole cocktail. That’s 1.5 oz. rye whiskey, 1 oz. sweet vermouth, and a dribble drabble of Bigallet China-China/Amer Picon and Bénédictine.
Stir, strain, up, lemon twist.
Despite its New Orleans-style name, I don’t think there is any evidence this drink was created in New Orleans. Tasty, however.
That's quite a banger. Thanks for sharing. Which genre would you even say it is? Indie rock?
Are there any other songs by Alex Chilton that you recommend?
Wes Montgomery's 1968 masterpiece "Up And At It".
His sound is always instantly recognizable—in part due to his signature playing style of using his thumb instead of a pick to pluck the guitar strings.

“All Your Love” is a terrific song; it’s been added to my permanent rotation. I gave it a listen after you recommended it to me, and I have played it at least 10 times since then. I will check out the two others as well. I also really like “I Can’t Quit You Baby”.
I’ll have to check out that song.
Always looking to expand my music repertoire!
Thank you! I will give those a listen.
Among the "three kings", Freddie certainly speaks the most to me. Any songs you recommend by those artists you mentioned?
I mean: I agree with you that "Hideaway" is one of his best. "Butterscotch" is also great!
Yes, I agree. "Hideaway" is another good one—not to mention "Stumble". "Hideaway" has so many different riffs in it, it's crazy. I also really love "Funny Bone", "Me and My Guitar", "Sittin' On The Boat Dock", etc. So many good ones. The king of blues guitar.
One of my all-time favorites from Freddie King. It doesn't get much better than this!
"San-Ho-Zay" (1961)

Em. Dash. Revolution. 🔨 Time to stop living in fear of "sounding like AI"—because it's AI that writes like us. Say the thing—take the risk. The future of writing is human.
Still one of the best songs in country music!
Merle Haggard – "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive" (1967)

Nice! I will take a listen to that album (it's on Apple Music). I haven't gotten much into Louis Armstrong yet. I recently discovered this funky, groovy soul-jazz tune from 1970. I have been listening to it more than I'd like to admit.

Gosh darn, that sounds terrific!
