NOVOSAURS: An Announcement. My two Novosaurs books - which depict imaginary domesticated dinosaurs of the near future - have proved extremely popular since the first volume was published back in early 2020. In addition to the book sales, the Novosaurs have also been featured in numerous podcasts and YouTube videos - sometimes with, sometimes without my consent. Although it was explicitly inspired by real-world "chickenosaurus" research, it was never intended as an endorsement of that project - something that I've had to explain repeatedly over the years. Art can be a way of exploring difficult and morally complex issues in a safe way, and that was what I had in mind for Novosaurs.
When I began work on the first book I was broadly agnostic on the subject. I thought the concept was intriguing, but the ethics were questionable, and the scientific objectives and benefits unclear. More recently, two other factors have come into play. Firstly the work of a large biotech company working on "de-extinction" who seem to prioritise hype over science, and attracting investors over objective truth. My Novosaurs illustrations have appeared in multiple videos discussing this company, without my knowledge or consent.
Secondly, more recently and much more importantly, in the wake of the Epstein revelations, serious accusations have arisen relating to the palaeontologist most associated with the chickenosaurus project (and whose book I reference in Novosaurs 1).I won't elaborate on that. Most of you will know exactly who I am referring to, and if you don't Google is your friend. Almost as disturbing has been the way that some (though not all) in the world of palaeontology have sought to downplay these accusations.
